From Vision to Delivery: Celebrating 25 Years of African-Led Development

Twenty-five years ago, five visionary leaders—Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Abdoulaye Wade, Hosni Mubarak, and Thabo Mbeki—made a bold, historic pledge: that Africa’s development would be driven by African leadership, ownership, and accountability. That foundational spark birthed NEPAD.

Today, standing in Nairobi alongside African Ambassadors accredited to Kenya, our CEO @nardosbthomas reflected on how far that journey has brought us.

As the international landscape undergoes profound transformation—marked by shifting global alliances, pressure on Official Development Assistance, climate pressures, and tightening financial conditions—Africa’s path forward is clearer than ever. Our challenge is no longer one of vision; Agenda 2063 has articulated our aspirations with precision. Our challenge today is delivery.

Over the past four years, we have undergone a deliberate institutional transformation to meet this exact challenge. By modernizing our systems, expanding technical expertise, and forging strategic partnerships, our programme portfolio has grown from USD 30 million to over USD 300 million. Building on this momentum, we have launched our One Billion Agency Vision, aiming to mobilise a USD 1 billion portfolio by 2029 to turn continental commitments into tangible realities.

From advancing the LAPSSET infrastructure corridor and championing regional integration under PIDA, to strengthening pharmaceutical manufacturing and health security right here in Nairobi, our success is measured by practical impact in the lives of African citizens.

None of this is achieved in isolation. Our African Ambassadors serve as the indispensable bridge between continental institutions, national governments, and global partners. As we celebrate a quarter-century of progress from NEPAD to AUDA-NEPAD, let us renew our shared commitment to strengthening African institutions, mobilizing domestic resources, and accelerating implementation.

Together, let’s turn ambition into enduring prosperity. 🌍📈
