The main purpose of religion, I wrote in the Incerto, is not to affirm that there is a God, but to prevent humans from thinking they are Gods.
Likewise the purpose of a modern king is not to rule, but to prevent politicians & office climbers from thinking that they are kings.
Thinking is an act of faith:
—that this is headed somewhere
—that good ideas will come
—that answers are out there to be found.
Sustaining that faith is hard, and that’s why thinking is hard.

2 kinds of tests:

I find that often those who really like (either) one find the other to be repugnant.
If you criticize people with the sole intention to weaken them professionally, you are flattering them. You are declaring that they may be competent enough to not fall without your assistance.
If you want to be the best, you have to be willing to go the distance. You can’t make excuses to hold yourself back or blame other people who have put in the time and effort. You don’t just wake up one day and become a champion.
