Franco Columbu and Arnold Schwarzenegger first met in Munich, West Germany, in 1965 and went on to form one of bodybuilding’s most enduring friendships. Under the mentorship of Joe Weider, both became leading figures of the “Golden Age of Bodybuilding,” training together throughout the late 1960s and 1970s at Gold’s Gym in Venice, California.

Born in Sardinia in 1941, Columbu was an exceptionally versatile strength athlete. Despite standing just 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm) tall, he won the Mr. Olympia title twice, in 1976 and 1981, and competed in bodybuilding, powerlifting, boxing, and strongman events. He was known for remarkable feats of strength, including deadlifting more than 700 pounds and reportedly bench pressing over 500 pounds.

Schwarzenegger captured the Mr. Olympia title seven times between 1970 and 1980, helping turn bodybuilding from a niche sport into a worldwide phenomenon through competitions, films, and television.

Their friendship became widely known through the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron, where Columbu’s humor and close bond with Schwarzenegger were key parts of the film. The documentary introduced bodybuilding to a much larger audience and helped launch Schwarzenegger’s career as a Hollywood star.
