Taliban legalize child marriage: a girl’s silence can now be treated as consent

Human rights activists are raising alarm. Under new rules, a girl’s silence after reaching puberty can be interpreted as consent to marriage.

The same rule does not apply to men or previously married women.

The document also grants fathers and grandfathers the right to arrange marriages for minors.

Even if the union is arranged by other relatives, it can still be recognized as valid if the families consider each other “suitable.”

The new law removes girls’ ability to refuse: forced marriages can only be challenged after reaching adulthood and only through courts controlled by the Taliban.
