“Portugal had never won a World Cup. Argentina already had one, so Messi had it easier.”

This might be the dumbest excuse Ronaldo fans have manufactured to cope with their idolo's failure.

Messi did not play with Kempes or Maradona.

Argentina went 24 years without reaching a World Cup final and 36 years without winning it before Messi ended both droughts.

2014:

Messi dragged a limited attacking team to the final.

4 goals.
13 clear-cut chances created.
46 successful dribbles.
Golden Ball.

The final attack was Messi, Higuaín and Lavezzi. Di María was unavailable.

2022:

7 goals.
3 assists.
2 goals in the final.
Golden Ball.
The first player ever to score in every round of a World Cup.

2026:

At 39 years old:

8 goals.
4 assists.
Another World Cup final.

Three different Argentina teams.
Three World Cup finals.
Messi was the attacking constant in every one.

Meanwhile Ronaldo had:

2006 -Figo, Deco, Carvalho, Maniche, Simão, Pauleta.

2022 - Costa, Cancelo, Dias, Pepe, Nuno Mendes, Palhinha, Vitinha, Bernardo, Bruno, Félix and Leão.

2026 - a top-five ranked team, reigning Nations League champions, four fresh Champions League winners, plus Dias, Cancelo, Bruno and Bernardo.

His best and deepest Portugal squads still produced a quarter-final exit in 2022 and a round-of-16 exit in 2026.

Portugal were even ranked ABOVE Argentina entering both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

Past trophies do not play football.

Messi did not inherit Argentina’s history.

He restored it.

Ronaldo did not suffer because Portugal lacked history.

🇵🇹 Portugal lacked a player capable of taking them to a World Cup final.

🇦🇷🐐
