Because human beings are remarkably good at treating yesterday's miracle as today's memory.
Remember that time you were in danger and you prayed to God that if he saves you, you will never fornicate with Yemisi again.
Then he miraculously saves you and the next day your head is under her skirt.
Fear changes our perception. When you're standing between an army and a sea, you desperately need God. Once you're safely on the other side, the miracle becomes a story you tell yourself.
The problem wasn't lack of evidence. It was the human tendency to let present circumstances overpower past experience.
You can witness the impossible and still doubt when the next impossible thing arrives.
POV: you’re a young adult trying to make ends meet by working a dead end job while committed to a relationship
You’re 23, fresh out of uni and you just finished your NYSC service and you got an entry level role in a fintech startup.
The hours are demanding, the pay is little and it’s not your dream job but you need it for experience but most importantly, the income.
You wake up at 5am in time to meet the staff bus that carries you to your dead end job that pays you very little for so much work. ₦200,000
You have a girlfriend who you both love each other and would do anything for each.
End of the month comes and your salary comes through on a Saturday because there was a delay the previous day. You’re watching football with your guys when it did and you breathe a sigh of relief.
You begin to budget and sort bills. Transport, feeding, data, black tax, electricity, Loan repayment etc. All you have left after all your calculations is ₦5,000.
Your babe has been asking when you’d take her out since the last time you did was 3 months ago. You can’t because you just borrowed money from Opay to carry you through the next month again.
She understands reluctantly and kisses you saying “things will get better”. You lowkey know you’re in danger.
FAST FORWARD 3 YEARS
Your pay is better than it was. You can now afford a lil extra. But it’s still not enough because the cost of living is high. You’re still with your girlfriend from five years ago. You both are planning for the future.
One day, she is at the supermarket and a tech bro in his 30s sees her, pays for her groceries and asks for her contact and wants to be her friend. She doesn’t want to seem rude so she gives it to him.
They step outside and he asks to drop her off since they’re going the same way and he unlocks his Mercedes Benz G63 AMG for her to open up and enter.
“It’s harmless. He’s a friend” is what she thinks. But deep down, she can’t shake the feeling that he wants more. She shrugs it off saying she loves her boyfriend, YOU!
He texts her 2 days later and asks how she’s doing. Apologizes for just texting because he’s been busy with a work project. They start texting and it’s frequent now. He randomly sends her money just for the sake of it. ₦100,000 here, ₦200,000 there.
You start noticing little changes in your babe but you don’t know how to confront her. She’s smiling when on her phone, she changed her password too. She’s distant now and can feel her slipping away. You talk to her about it but she says it’s nothing but work stress.
You finally saved up to take her on a date. ₦100,000 that you know would do something for you but anything to make your baby happy. After the date, things look good for a while but the cracks begin to appear again.
Her “friend” sends her more money than you make in a month. She knows you’re trying your best and still loves you but her attention is divided now.
Things get worse and you can tell things are coming to an end. One sunny Sunday afternoon, she texts you that you guys need to talk. You ask her to come over but she says she’d prefer to talk over texts.
She sends you a long message about how she’s no longer feeling the spark and wants a break. You anticipated it but you still can’t believe it’s happening. You try to plead with her but her mind is made up. She blocked you everywhere. Her friends are no longer responding to you.
My 2 weeks old girlfriend came to visit me on Friday for the weekend.
I made my signature jollof rice that evening. Yesterday I took her out twice. We had a good time.
This morning before church, I asked her to prepare something delicious before I got back. I had everything at home. She only needed chicken, and I sent money for it.
No response. I assumed she heard me and left.
I came back from church to an empty kitchen. No smell of food. Nothing.
I asked why.
"It is too early to start performing wife duties. This is my first time visiting and you already want me to cook? Fear God."
I asked her to send back the money so I could prepare my own food.
She showed me a takeaway pack. She had bought food for herself and eaten. My money was gone.
I stepped outside for 30 minutes to calm down.
When I came back, I told her to get dressed, drove her to the junction and told her I was done.
I hate this kind of thing. What is there in cooking for your man? Mtchewwww! I'm done.
Above all, love God.
