They say history is written by the winners. Growing up, I remember hearing about 88/89. About fires, forced curfews, severed heads on doorsteps, bodies floating in lakes.

I was told this was the work of JVP. Even as a child, I had two questions. Why did they do it, and why were they allowed in politics after that without being labelled terrorists like the LTTE?

So I studied about that period as I got older. What I realised is that there is no justification for what the JVP did. But also that history has been kind to the then government, because there was virtually no independent, private media at the time.

The impact of 88/89 has been felt for decades since. A lot of passionate people, who believed in a different Sri Lanka, were either killed off or had to migrate. Their absence probably explains the collective slumber that our population seems to have been in for over 30 years.

An unbiased re-examination of what happened in 88/89, and what led to those events, will be instructive for the future, to ensure it never happens again. #SriLanka #lka
