Jackie the eagle appears to have hatched in Big Bear Valley, in the San Bernardino Mountains, in 2012. In 2018, when Friends of Big Bear Valley launched their eagle feed, Jackie had taken over her parents’ former nest and was in prime position for camera viewing. So for nearly a decade, people were able to watch Jackie, her mates, and her chicks in their everyday life.

Then, in July, Jackie vanished from the cameras for several days, only to be seen struggling in the lake after a fight. She was captured and brought in for treatment, where she was found to be suffering from severe anemia. She received a CT scan and a blood donation from another eagle. For a few days, she seemed to be on the mend. Then her health declined again, and she died on August 10th. “I felt a twinge of grief when the Ojai Raptor Center reported Jackie’s death, and I didn’t feel foolish for doing so,” Alex Ross writes.
