Tom Dewey - Obviously came close. More or less created the post-FDR Republican party, especially the Eastern establishment wing.

Hubert Humphrey - last of the liberal hawks; a win in '68 & Democratic Party doesn't go as far left as it did after.

I don't know the specific needs of your dad; using airplane toilets can be a problem for many. It sounds like the time in the air shouldn't be very long, staying in the SE corner of the USA. (2/n)
