🚨🇨🇦 Jesse Marsch on Canada’s Rejected Penalty Appeal:
“I don’t usually like talking about refereeing decisions because I know the pressure they’re under, but I honestly believe we should have had a penalty in the first half. From my angle, I saw clear contact. Richie Laryea put himself in a dangerous position, there was a touch inside the box, and I felt it was enough to bring him down. In a World Cup knockout match, moments like that can completely change the course of a game.
I’m disappointed because all we ask for is consistency. If that challenge is given as a penalty at one end of the pitch, it should be given at the other. We believed we had a very strong case, so it’s only natural that the players were frustrated when play continued.
What makes me proud, though, is the way this team responded. We refused to let one decision define our night. We stayed calm, trusted our football, kept creating opportunities, and our persistence was eventually rewarded with the goal that sent us through. That speaks volumes about the mentality and resilience of this group.
South Africa defended with incredible determination, and I have a lot of respect for them. But I’m delighted that my players never lost their focus after such a significant decision went against us. Football has a way of testing your character before rewarding your effort, and tonight, this team passed that test.”

🚨🇿🇦 “Modiba Saved Everything… Until He Couldn’t.” — Zlatan Ibrahimović
“I’ll say what many people won’t want to hear—football isn’t about sympathy, it’s about courage. South Africa never truly looked like a team ready for knockout football today. From the opening whistle, they played with caution instead of confidence. Every time Canada increased the pressure, you could sense the uncertainty. The passes lacked composure, the clearances were rushed, and too often they looked like a side trying to survive rather than one trying to win.”
“I have nothing but respect for the defenders because they carried the team for most of the match. Ronwen Williams produced important saves, Aubrey Modiba made an unbelievable goal-line clearance that kept South Africa alive, and the back line threw themselves into every challenge. They gave everything. But football doesn’t allow defenders to rescue you forever. At some point, the rest of the team has to take responsibility.”
“Canada earned this victory. They kept asking questions, they created the better chances, they recovered from the disappointment of the first half, and they never stopped believing. That’s the mentality required in knockout football. You don’t give up because the breakthrough doesn’t come early—you keep pushing until your opponent finally breaks.”
“And eventually, the wall gave way. Not because South Africa were unlucky, but because they spent too much of the match defending instead of competing. You cannot survive for ninety minutes expecting your defenders to perform miracles. Miracles don’t last forever. Canada’s relentless pressure finally paid off, the breakthrough arrived, and the team that showed more ambition deservedly booked its place in the Round of 16. That’s not disrespect—that’s simply football.”

🔴 Gary Neville says he’d love to see Ole Gunnar Solskjær return to Manchester United as Sporting Director.
Gary Neville believes Ole Gunnar Solskjær would be the perfect sporting director for Manchester United.
🗣️ One thing Solskjær has consistently shown is his eye for talent. Whenever he identifies a young player, give it 2–3 years and they often develop into world-class stars.
During his time at United, he pushed for the club to sign Erling Haaland in 2019 while he was still at Molde. He also admired Jude Bellingham when he was at Birmingham City, along with players like Declan Rice, Harry Kane, Moisés Caicedo, and several others who have since become top-class footballers.
More recently, he has highlighted emerging talents such as Johan Manzambi, Antonio Nusa, Jens Petter Hauge, and Andreas Schjelderup.
Given that United is still searching for the right transfer strategy and Ole is currently available, appointing him to oversee recruitment would be a highly logical move.
