“I have never in my quarter of a century in journalism seen a greater effort to criminalize and demonize speaking to people on the other side of America’s wars.”
—Drop Site’s @JeremyScahill spoke to Progressive International’s @VarshaGandikota about Drop Site News being labeled “pro-terrorism” for interviewing Palestinian and Iranian figures. He said that in any society that professes to be democratic, a public has the right to understand the other side of things.
@mehdirhasan What a circular guy, now resorting to talking about imaginary genocide to dim real genocide in order to regain favor of your base camp media which sacked you because you talked real genocide
@mehdirhasan If you keeps peddling such narrative, really makes one wonder: if you desperately wants to get back in good grace of your base camp medias that forced you out because you talked about real genocide…
@RnaudBertrand What a circular guy, now resorting to talking about imaginary genocide to dim real genocide in order to regain favor of his base camp media which sacked him because he talked real genocide
@RnaudBertrand Well said Arnaud, if Hasan keeps peddling such narrative, really makes one wonder: if he desperately wants to go back in good grace of his base camp medias that forced him out because he talks about real genocide…
Recycling the Uyghur narrative in the current context and thereby drawing a moral equivalency with Gaza is absolutely abject and completely discredits whoever does so.
Anyone can see in Gaza what an actual genocide looks like in the age of social media: the thousands and thousands of images of people killed, the complete destruction of a society, the genocidal rhetoric by leaders, etc.
By contrast, we don't have a single image of a Uyghur killed by the Chinese government - not a single one! - even though Xinjiang is China's most popular touristic destination today with over 200 million visitors a year, each with their mobile phone... Anyone can freely go there and see with their own eyes what's going on... The Chinese government even recently introduced a visa-free policy so that chances are you don't even need a visa to go see what's going on with your own eyes (French citizens like me for instance can stay there 15 days without a visa).
There's also zero genocidal rhetoric, quite the contrary in fact: Uyghurs and Uyghur culture are celebrated in China, which is the very reason why Xinjiang is so popular for Chinese tourists. Also Uyghurs - as an ethnic minority - have always benefited from favorable policies versus Hans: they never had to abide by the one-child policy for instance and have preferential access to all Chinese universities (and, anecdotally, all Chinese universities are mandated to have at least one Halal restaurant to serve them).
The contrast with Israelis and Palestinians is absolutely immense.
The Muslim world realizes this and unanimously supports and even "commends the efforts of the People's Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens" (an actual quote from a report by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation - which gathers all of the world's Muslim states): there's not a single Muslim country in the world - not a single one - that officially backs the Western narrative on Xinjiang because they understand that it's an infowar and a destabilization attempt of the same kind that's regularly used against them. By contrast they all unanimously condemn what's going on in Gaza, because they can see it for what it is.
Did these "reeducation camps" (which China called "vocational education and training centers") exist? Yes they did, they were a temporary measure that occured between 2017 and 2019 (which means they've been closed for many years already) in order to fight off a large wave of terrorist attacks by Uyghur separatist groups like ETIM. Groups which, by the way, the West was also fighting in places like Afghanistan (on the border with Xinjiang) and Syria: you can find scores of articles from 2017-2018 announcing that the US dropped another set of bombs on these Uyghur fighter groups... China didn't kill these people, unlike the West, but instead put in place these temporary facilities: the idea was to identify everyone sympathetic to this ideology and try to reinsert themselves into society via education. Was it pleasant for those who went through this? Probably not, it is a form of detention, but it certainly beats death or prison... Can you criticize it, argue that the policy was overly harsh and broad? Absolutely, be my guest. What you cannot do however is to call this a "genocide" as it doesn't even remotely meet any of the definitions for it, and again makes an absolute mockery of actual genocides like Gaza.
And make no mistake: if you peddle this narrative you're helping perpetuate the very situation that made Gaza possible. The world described by Karl Rove when he said "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too." A world where actual reality doesn't matter, where you don't need to understand peoples beyond the West or even take their voice into account, where something is "true" only if it comes from the "empire"...
On February 21, 2021 this recording of Woody Allen the Hollywood filmmaker and his ex Mia Farrow confronting him for abusing their 12-year old step-daughter was leaked in Allen v. Farrow.

NEW: 🇺🇲 Congressman Mike Waltz revealed that “The US Air Force pays $90,000 for a package of bushings that normally costs well under $100” yesterday.
Ukraine will actually receive $10 billion from the $61 bilion package, everything else will be stolen !
🚨NEWS: In a secret meeting with AIPAC donors, Dem @SenGillibrand insisted Israel is minimizing civilian casualties & said pro-ceasefire lawmakers in Congress are misled by misinformation from “TikTok and China and Russia and our other adversaries.” https://t.co/u36pA2jzYf
US chauvinism & warmongering is so ingrained that @AdamSchiff can openly declare, in Jan 2020, that US uses Ukraine to “fight Russia over there,” and our elites applaud. Fast forward two years later when Russia fights back, and the same circle is outraged.
@SholaMos1 you are to a point of being pathetic beyond remedy, that you see nothing in your eyes or in your world but color of skin… humans are human first, with their own uniqueness, character, talent, virtue, etc. or lack any of it…
