We stand together with Lithuania 🇱🇹 & its people in marking for the 3⃣5⃣th time the tragic events in Vilnius, when on the night of 12 January 1991, 14 unarmed defenders of Lithuanian independence were brutally killed by bullets fired by Soviet forces & crushed under the tracks of tanks, & several hundred others were injured 🕯️

The Day of the Defenders of Freedom, or “Bloody Sunday”, was a decisive moment for our Lithuanian neighbours & a warning to Latvians: freedom, once taken away, cannot be regained without a struggle. Yet, despite the imbalance of forces, the non-violent resistance and courage of the Lithuanian 🇱🇹 & Latvian 🇱🇻 peoples made it possible to safeguard the independence of our states. Even today, standing shoulder to shoulder, Lithuania & Latvia continue to strengthen their security and independence, fully aware of the high price of freedom.
