A @Meta study has achieved language decoding using purely non-invasive brain recordings (MEG helmet or scalp EEG) with an impressive a character-error-rate of 32%.
For comparison, the error rate based on decoding invasive signals recorded directly from the face-motor cortex is between 6-15%. Room to grow but impressive nonetheless.
