Why blaming our own country weakens us, and why serious Canadians should reject it

Canada is entering a period that will test its economic resilience, political maturity, and national confidence.

Recent tariff threats and erratic behaviour from Donald Trump underscore a simple reality: Canada cannot afford complacency, nor can it afford self-flagellation. The decision to deepen trade with partners beyond the United States is an inevitable and necessary response to the situation we find ourselves in as a nation. Nearly every major U.S. trading partner has reached the same conclusion.

Yet too much commentary still defaults to blaming Canada itself, as if prudence were weakness and independent foreign policy a provocation. I reject that framing outright.

My work is grounded in a clear principle: Canada’s interests deserve to be defended soberly, strategically, and without apology. We can acknowledge mistakes where they exist, but we should never internalize responsibility for the volatility or unreliability of others. Trump’s behaviour is his own, and Canada is not to blame for his refusal to adhere to past trade agreements nor his disgraceful effort to weaken and divide our country. Canada's response should be unity, realism, and resolve.

Catherine O’Hara was one of a kind. A rare light in this world and her passing hits with a weight I can’t fully put into words.

She wasn’t just a legendary artist,
actor and comedian. She was an ambassador for Canada in the truest sense: brilliant, fearless, deeply original, and so full of humanity. She made the world laugh, but she also made people feel seen.

As an artist, she inspired me more than she’ll ever know. She set the bar for what it means to represent your country with excellence and grace and all without ever losing warmth or humility.

My heart is broken for her family, her loved ones, and everyone who adored her, both here in Canada and around the world.

The goal is simple but really important, keep foster siblings together, something that fails in about 75% of cases nationwide.
