The main drivers of wetland loss and degradation include agricultural expansion, pollution, infrastructure development, hydrological disruption, and climate change.

Wetlands ecosystems is facing significant threats worldwide, with a report of 411 million hectares of wetlands have been lost since 1970, with an ongoing annual decline of 0.52%.
