So cool to finally get to meet him twice in a week after decades of being in the outfield watching him!

José Guzmán (born April 9, 1963, in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) was a right-handed starting pitcher who played in MLB from 1985 to 1994, primarily with the Texas Rangers (1985–1988, 1991–1992) and briefly with the Chicago Cubs (1993–1994). He compiled a career record of 80–74 with a 4.05 ERA, 889 strikeouts, and 1,224.1 innings pitched over 193 games (186 starts).
Key Career Highlights with the Rangers
• Debut and Early Promise (1985–1988): Signed by the Rangers as an amateur free agent in 1981 at age 17. Made his MLB debut on September 10, 1985, vs. the Oakland Athletics. In limited 1985 action (5 starts), he went 3–2 with a 2.76 ERA.
• In 1986, as a rookie, he started Opening Day and threw 8 scoreless innings for a win against the defending AL East champion Toronto Blue Jays — one of the first rookie Opening Day victories since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981. He finished 9–15, 4.54 ERA in 29 starts.
• 1987: Solidified as a rotation mainstay with 14–14, 4.67 ERA over 208.1 innings (second on the team in wins) and 143 strikeouts.
• 1988: Strong season with 11–13, 3.70 ERA (second on the team), 206.2 innings, 157 strikeouts, 6 complete games, and 2 shutouts.
• Injury and Comeback (1989–1992): Missed significant time (nearly two full seasons) due to arm/elbow injuries. Made a strong return in 1991, going 13–7 with a 3.08 ERA in 25 starts (Rangers Pitcher of the Year). He won the 1991 AL Comeback Player of the Year Award (Sporting News).
• Peak Season (1992): Career-best year with 16–11, 3.66 ERA in a league-leading workload of 224 innings (most in his career), 179 strikeouts (4th in AL), and 5 complete games. Also received the Rangers Harold McKinney Good Guy Award.
Notable Moments and Post-Rangers Career
• With the Cubs in 1993, he nearly threw a no-hitter on April 6 vs. the Atlanta Braves (broken up by a single with two outs in the 9th; he allowed only 1 hit in a 1–0 win). Finished 12–10, 4.34 ERA.
• Career totals include 26 complete games and 4 shutouts. He had multiple 200+ inning seasons and showed durability when healthy.
After retiring (final game May 23, 1994), Guzmán became a longtime Spanish-language radio broadcaster for the Texas Rangers (since ~2004) and has stayed involved as a special instructor. He was inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame.
Guzmán’s Rangers tenure highlighted resilience through injuries and solid mid-rotation/ace-level contributions during a transitional era for the franchise. ⚾️🐐
