My advice is for people to get their foot in the door first. Civil Service is a good place to start since there are lots of career switchers there.

Apply for bulk recruitment campaigns, then work your way up from there. Most EO/HO roles do train.

UK CIVIL SERVICE DATA ALERT - May 2026

HMRC and DWP are both actively hiring.

HMRC:
Roles: Data Analyst, Data Engineer, Data Scientist
Grade: HEO to Grade 7 · Salary: £36,000 – £65,000+
Focus: Tax compliance analytics, operational reporting, digital services data

DWP:
Roles: Data Analyst, Performance Analyst, MI Analyst
Grade: EO to SEO · Salary: £28,000 – £52,000
Focus: Benefits data, labour market statistics, social policy

Both: hybrid working, permanent contracts, Civil Service pension.

WHAT THE INTERVIEW ACTUALLY TESTS:
Every answer must follow STAR - Situation, Task, Action, Result.

They want what you did. Specifically what YOU did. And what happened because of it.

Nigerian and international experience is valid evidence.

Your Lagos projects, your private sector analysis, all counts. Frame it in STAR. That is the only requirement.

Technical screen by grade:
EO/HEO: SQL scenario, sometimes Excel
SEO/Grade 7: SQL + Python + explain your methodology
