One #BioDAO project a day! @join_microdao@BioProtocol
MicroDAO is a decentralized, community-driven project tackling one of the world’s silent health emergencies: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when microbes—bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites—evolve in ways that render existing drugs ineffective. Without action, common infections and routine medical procedures may become deadly.
1. The Problem:
- AMR already causes over one million deaths annually, and projections estimate that by 2050 AMR could kill 10 million people per year if left unchecked.
- Low- and middle-income countries are especially vulnerable, because limited access to drugs, diagnostics, infrastructure, and funding makes it harder to manage AMR.
- The traditional pharmaceutical/business model weakly supports AMR research: drug development is expensive (often over $1 billion), profits are small (since antimicrobials are used sparingly), and return on investment is uncertain. Many big pharma firms have reduced or shut down AMR R&D.
- Global funding for AMR is very low—less than 1% of global infectious disease R&D funding goes toward AMR.
2. MicroDAO’s Mission & Model:
- MicroDAO aims to rebuild how AMR innovation is supported, by combining community governance, transparent funding, and decentralized incentives. Key features include:
- A marketplace for tools, datasets, diagnostics, treatments, and other innovations related to AMR. Participants can both browse & contribute and earn rewards.
- On-chain governance: decisions are made by the community using blockchain-based governance mechanisms. This enhances transparency and participation.
- Sustainable value capture: ecosystem activity generates funding for AMR research and innovation. A token (MICRO) is used to fuel contributions, maintain the treasury, and align incentives.
3. Roadmap & Key Areas:
Some of the research & implementation focus areas include:
- Predict & Validate: using genomic, clinical, environmental data to predict AMR trends and validate via surveillance & experiments.
- Prevent: infection prevention, stewardship, behavior change.
- Cure: accelerating R&D for diagnostics, vaccines, antimicrobial agents, and models for cost-effective treatments.
4. Why It Matters?
@join_microdao addresses gaps in the current system: lack of funding, insufficient incentives, governance opacity. By leveraging decentralised models, it hopes to mobilize global, community-based resources to support neglected but critical AMR innovation. If successful, it could change how the world responds to drug resistance—not just scientifically, but systemically.
