To my journo friends, on World Press Freedom day, especially the one's like me working from relative safety in Canada.
I am angry at the state of journalism, and I am angry at the forces standing against us, but I am also angry at our lack of collective fight.
A good example why pubs should limit use of handout pics. Too many CAN pubs use HO photos too frequently, with big risks. Harming trust in them and Journalism as a whole. Serious Journalism means hiring trusted photojournalists and experienced photo editors.
Roy Cardinal hasn’t been released yet, he’s expected out tonight but I just watched city workers tear down his teepee. Edmonton is under extreme cold warning, it’s -26, feels like -32.
I just spoke with Brandi, EPS have arrested and charged her and are threatening to keep her for 24 hours. Instead of picking up her daughter, she’s waiting to find out if she will have to sleep in jail. #JournalismIsNotACrime
Alberta owns a new record.
The province is home to an abandoned gas well that leaks methane, an explosive #GreenhouseGas, into the atmosphere at the highest rate ever recorded in North America.

This is John Lyke, who has a very cool niche.
He went to film school and was a pro rollerblader & snowboarder.
This venn diagram of skills makes him an expert “blade camera operator”, a job that involves filming with a $100k camera while on roller blades.
You may have caught his footage in HBO’s fictional re-telling of the 1980s LA Lakers (“Winning Time”).
The basketball scenes are lightly co-ordinated and — to keep the action as real as possible — the players just go hard for 10-15 plays in a row and they take the best footage to edit.
End result is 💯.
Residents & officials across NWT can't access reliable news about wildfires on Facebook, esp. as evacuation efforts get underway.
This is unacceptable.
We urge Meta to reverse its decision to prevent Canadians from viewing news on Facebook/Instagram.

🧵Critical reporting via @FawcettAtkinson - one of best ways 🔥 & 🚨agencies can combat mis- & disinfo is let pro journalists have access. Yet in Canada, they often contribute to info vacuums by barring press. The public can’t understand what it can’t see https://t.co/71A1XxmV6B
It’s almost as though having dedicated editors to ensure journalistic principals are applied to the photos is actually a mission-critical role for news outlets
We could call them “photo editors”
Just a thought…
