How Polynesians spread across the Pacific thousands of years ago...

The settlement of the Pacific by Polynesian navigators ranks among humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration. Beginning more than 3,000 years ago, Austronesian-speaking peoples expanded eastward from Taiwan and Island Southeast Asia, reaching Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa by around 1000–800 BC. From these island hubs, later generations ventured across millions of square miles of open ocean to settle some of the most remote places on Earth.

Polynesian voyagers crossed vast distances without compasses, maps, or modern instruments. Instead, they navigated by observing stars, ocean swells, cloud formations, bird migrations, and even the color of the water. Their double-hulled canoes could carry families, livestock, crops, and supplies over journeys lasting weeks.

By about AD 700–900, Polynesians had settled the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Hawaii, and the Marquesas. New Zealand was reached around AD 1200, while Easter Island (Rapa Nui), one of the most isolated inhabited places on Earth, was settled around the same period.

The Polynesian Triangle, bounded by Hawaii, New Zealand, and Easter Island, covers roughly 10 million square miles (25 million square kilometers), an area larger than North America. Yet its islands were connected by one of the most sophisticated non-instrument navigation traditions ever developed.

Russia Confirms Digital Ruble Rollout Date

Russian central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina said preparations for the CBDC launch are complete.

Authorities expect the digital ruble to launch on Sept. 1 as previously planned.

The CBDC will operate alongside the traditional ruble and expand gradually. The enabling law takes effect on Sept. 1.

It will initially be accepted by financial and credit institutions.
