Vote Leave’s former chief Matthew Elliot wouldn’t do an interview with Channel 4 News, so we tracked him down to ask about the Leave campaign’s alleged overspending.
@adampayne26 Busses are incredibly expensive. My mum used to get the bus regularly rather than drive but now never catches the bus because the fares are so high. A journey that used to cost £1.40 6 years ago is now £2.10
Drafts of the Vote Leave investigation reveal that it:
- Made an inaccurate return of campaign expenditure
- Is missing invoices and receipts
- Failed to comply with a statutory notice, and
- Exceeded its spending limit

.@chrisinsilico: "When you are caught in the Olympics doping, there is not a debate on how much illegal drug you took...If you are caught cheating, you lose your medal."
Shouldn't our Democracy be held to at least the same standard as top level sport? #VoteLeaveCheated
@VictorJones500 @greygossling @bbclaurak It doesn't matter what it was for. If the campaigns worked too closely together it breaks election law. Vote Leave had reached its spending limit. They told donors to donate to BeLeave instead. @carolecadwalla has covered this extensively. They broke the law.
1. Cabinet minister accused of not telling truth by NAO, authorities to say Vote Leave broke law in #euref, Cabinet squabbling over eu plans they haven’t all even seen yet and eu likely to reject, brexiteer MPs summoned to see chief whip - just another day in 2018 -oh, and #pmqs
@LaurakBuzz@gmail And yet 3rd parties are still allowed to read your emails... You can't have more than one gmail open but they can read as many as they like at once
As news of @vote_leave cheating breaks with an @ElectoralCommUK report, spare a thought for @shahmiruk - the brave Beleave whistleblower who was outed by Downing Street when he stepped forward three months ago.
It can’t get reported properly at this stage because we don’t know the details but it’ll help the sting out the real report when it arrives because there’ll be a sense we’ve already heard it...it’s a cynical attempt to bury bad news by a campaign headed by 2 govt ministers.
This is the official Vote Leave campaign, funded with taxpayers’ money & it leaked this report to select outlets. It briefed the Sun yesterday but wouldn’t answer the Guardian’s emails...
This isn’t the official report. We don’t know the sanction. & it was leaked & spun by Vote Leave who put it out after midnight, post-football. These are criminal offences & @BorisJohnson & @michaelgove are in the frame & really troubling they used state broadcaster to do this https://t.co/aBErhiGAnH
Please also remember that Boris Johnson and Michael Gove headed up Vote Leave and so are complicit in breaking electoral law
This pre-rebuttal gives us a chance to prepare ourselves to call for their resignations when the report is officially published

@heydebigale@the_moviebob@classicroxanne If you ever get any more name brand transformers, the Hasbro website have the instructions for every transformer ever released on it
@LaurakBuzz I generally don't have the time to sit down and read but will listen to audiobooks while commuting, doing menial work, cooking etc. It's very rare I buy a text book now but I do buy at least one audiobook a month if not more
You hoo, @afneil! Just spotted that @lordashcroft is a founding member of your super-secret Addison club. You know, the one you told @arron_banks was "sympathetic" to his cause. Why not question him? He knows all about this non-Brexit-Russia story. Right, @lordashcroft?
