So the US Government knew so little about what was happening in Afghanistan that they had no idea the Afghan Security Forces would evaporate and the Taliban immediately take over, but they were able to find within 24 hours the precise ISIS-K "planner" to kill? OK.
A long time ago I was assigned to write a piece on how to cook rice and all the Chinese cooks I spoke to were like...buy a rice cooker?

Today the world changed forever.
Why? Because a group of Artificial Intelligence researchers released something called "GPT-3".
In short: it's a computer program that can interact like a ridiculously intelligent human.
And it will blow your mind 👇
Writing about US food the way the NYT covers Asian fruit: In a nation torn by racial conflict, one unlikely food unites. To those accustomed to chopsticks, the greasy parcel known as a 'burger', a sort of split bao, is crude and messy. Yet it encapsulates a nation's violent past.

Today, I released a short report into the location of Chinese & Indian forces along 3 hotspots @ Ladakh sector, using satellite imagery from May and June.
Please check it out here if you're interested. https://t.co/JR3Gvxf0Yx

Three days after the Chinese government locked down Hubei, a local government official more than 1,000km away received data from telecoms carriers alerting her to a list of people who had left Hubei and entered her town. https://t.co/rJhNH9IYok
Things Covid has proven:
1. The job you were told couldn't be done remotely can be done remotely
2. Many disabled workers could have been working from home, but corporations just didnt want them to.
3. Internet is a utility, not a luxury
4. Universal healthcare is necessary
The World Health Organization has announced that dogs cannot contract Covid-19. Dogs previously held in quarantine can now be released. To be clear, WHO let the dogs out.
1/25 Part 1 - Why does soap work so well on the SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? Because it is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer. A two part thread about soap, viruses and supramolecular chemistry #COVID19
finding it hard to wrap my head around this year to date. basically 70 days in & we've had: impeachment vote, assassination of a foreign leader/retaliatory strike and fears of a new war, super divisive presidential primary, and the slow creeping spread of a global pandemic. 2020!
Everyone should watch this clip (in English) of Chinese diplomat in Australia trying out the CCP “fake news” defense against evidence of arbitrary detention of Aus Uyghurs, internment of millions. He faithfully repeats the official line, and audience laughs in disbelief.
My issues with proposals to compensate ppl for their data (as a solution to privacy):
- fail to treat privacy as a public good, which can't be protected via the decisions of individuals
- privacy becomes a luxury for the rich
- can still make inferences about ppl who opt out 1/?
