1/ I’m an Israeli historian. My community is still too silent about the horrible war in Gaza. Over 8 months I’ve closely followed the war, reading >1000 articles and viewing >1000 videos/images of the war from all sides. My summary conclusions & full report are in the 🧵:
With vouchers to blame for ~50% of Arizona’s state budget hole, the right-wing led legislature is borrowing money from—wait for it—opioid settlement funds.
Rather than reel back voucher spending.
An unconscionable example of the damage these schemes do to other resources.
Once he's settled in with his parole officer, I am certain he will discover that Milwaukee is a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming city full of diverse neighborhoods and a thriving business community.
In writing studies all I hear is that we should be teaching students how to use AI ethically—but with ZERO consideration of its environmental impacts or the labor issues related to training LLMs. We cannot ignore those ethical dimensions!
Between Dec 1 and 15, 2023 -- after I began publishing records of admins' use of private flights -- WVU administrators changed their processes to produce significantly fewer public records documenting their use of privately chartered aircraft travel services.
Between this @HarperCollins announcing AI audiobooks, @A24 starting AI marketing, it's clear the companies holding art hostage are trying to pull a slow lobster boil on us with AI. I hope we continue to shame them mercilessly for betraying their human artists & audience.
I’m saving my biggest eye rolls for responses: “what is ‘originality’ anyway?” or “does anyone really ‘own’ art?”
Like, yeah, I get it, but students and writers are steamrolled while we debate angels on a pin.
Every AI conversation in rhet/comp must wrestle with this problem: Until AI language models are built exclusively on public domain work, there is *no* ethical way to use them. They're built w/the stolen work of countless struggling writers and artists, who we exploit w/each use.
@DLib24 If they happen, there must be no alcohol and at least one other faculty member present. I would also run everything by the Department Chair (maybe the Dean?) ahead of time, and make safe student travel the top priority.
Having said that: I would never ever host one. Boundaries.
However, it definitely isn't lost on me that so many of my BIPOC colleagues had some flat-out troubling experiences at #4C24, esp. with those badge checkers.
Sidenote: it's the ABSOLUTE example of pretentiousness to have conference center staff stop-and-frisk for a conference.
Got back to my hotel room minutes ago hungry after a 2-martini evening and realized that I have leftover curry and naan from lunch chilling in the ice bucket 🤣
Insane? Yes. Strange? No question.
But right now it feels like I’ve hit the lottery.
