@DAgranoffAuthor Reading Valis is bittersweet. Being autobiographical it’s maybe PKD taking stock of his crazy life…a sort of self therapy. Combined with his increased recognition and financial stability post Blade Runner, it could have been a springboard to some amazing output in the 80s & 90s
@DAgranoffAuthor As my fave PKD book, it’s one of the few books l reread regularly. A lot of great humour in that one (his ability to write humour is often under-appreciated), I‘m smiling right now thinking about Kevin and his goddam cat.
@SFRuminations I’ve been meaning to pick this up. I see it’s part of a 16 author series all similarly priced. Have you read or purchased any others? The Joanna Russ and Brian Aldiss volumes look promising.
@jpsmythe This is 1989, but Move Away Jimmy Blue by Del Amitri.
“Move away Jimmy Blue, before your small, small town turns around and swallows you…”
Great song.
Looking at today’s @audubonsociety page-a-day bird calendar I can’t help but think that the coincidence of these macaws appearing today in their magnificent blue and yellow plumage is a tribute to the people of #Ukraine#birdwatching
@tracey_thorn Having Ann Wilson as lead singer of Heart it was unusual for her sister to do lead vocals but Nancy did sing what I think was their biggest hit, These Dreams, with a bad cold.
@SFRuminations My local university library had this in the non-circulating reference section in the 90s and I had to sit in the library in order to read the whole thing. But it was worth it as I remember it being a great summary of nuclear fiction.
@SFRuminations I was just about to tweet that I'd seen that tanguy had been used for sf covers, but of course you beat me to it and already have a post about it! I think he was used for some HG Wells covers as well.
@SFRuminations I was reading about writers and their book collections and came across this about Jonathan Lethem who, like you, will buy and read anything with a Powers cover. He compares his work to Yves Tanguy…I certainly see the resemblance. Wonder if Powers ever cited him as an influence?
@SFRuminations I’m trying to remember when they started doing movie tie-in editions featuring scenes or actors from the film on the cover…maybe it was some time in the 80s. Before that I think they used to just print ‘ Now a major motion picture’ on the front of the original cover.
@SFRuminations I thought maybe they might have slapped the film poster on the back of the book after the movie came out as some sort of promotion...in the days before someone came up with the horrible idea of having completely redisigned movie tie-in editions.
@SFRuminations I have this but with a different back cover, mine featuring the writers themselves lounging outside their California beach house as they work on the final draft, making the life of an author seem quite carefree and fabulous.
@JakeRudh With side one filled with great singles and side two a suite of many short interconnected songs I remember someone fittingly calling it the Abbey Road of the 80s.
@VisionaryGeist I instantly thought: it's Louise! but you're right, the pigeon appears earlier....but we may never know as so far, there are no plans for season 2.
