A native of San Francisco, I write about state and local politics for The Chronicle, as well as about the way the city is changing, for better or worse.
Look who showed up at @welcometomannys to see @cmarinucci and @DougSovern and me talk about CA #recall: The Big Man @jfwildermuth. Afterwards, he told me “You only messed up one thing.”
@joegarofoli @welcometomannys @cmarinucci@DougSovern That’s good. I typically screw up way more than that. Great talk at Manny’s in SF, a place for thoughtful discussion
Today, Jan. 4, is my last day as a political reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. After 35 years at the Chron and 46 years working for California daily newspapers, I've taken a buyout. To quote the Grateful Dead, "what a long, strange trip it's been." But always, always fun.
Release from Julian Castro talks about his 'surge' in a new national poll. Now in 'statistical tie' for 4th at 4%. But if he's 'statistically' tied with Bloomberg and Bettigieg at 5%, then he's also even with Klobuchar, Yang and Steyer at 3% and Booker, Delaney, Patrick at 2%.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg's South Bend is the 4th largest city in Indiana, as Cory Booker took pains to point out in last night's Dem debate. Well, South Bend (pop. 102,245) would be number 16 in the Bay Area, behind San Mateo (105,025) and just ahead of Vacaville (100,154)

New report by Cal Center for Jobs and the economy shows that Colusa County now has state's highest unemployment rate at 19.6 percent. That's what happens when you let unemployed politicians move in from Sacramento.
