🚨Update: "Deportation is not a crime. It is the result of one."

That is exactly right. The crime came first. Deportation is just the consequence Congress wrote into law.

Under 8 U.S.C. 1325, crossing the border outside a legal port of entry is a federal crime. First offense is a misdemeanor.

Second offense is a felony. Under 8 U.S.C. 1326, coming back after being deported is a felony carrying up to twenty years.

These are not Trump laws. These are not ICE regulations. Congress passed them. Congress kept them. Every senator and representative had a chance to change them and did not.

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, still the governing statute today, spells out exactly who is deportable. Section 237 covers the classes. Section 240 covers the process. Nowhere does the law say "only deport the ones who commit a second crime after arrival." Unlawful entry by itself is the deportable act.

America welcomes immigrants. Millions arrive legally every year. They wait, they pay fees, they pass background checks, they swear an oath. That process is the front door. The border is not the front door.

ICE is not the villain here. ICE is the enforcement. If you want the deportations to stop, tell Congress to change the law. Until then, every removal is exactly what the law demands.

For a brief, dazzling moment, a tiny Pacific island was the richest place per head on earth.

Its people spent the fortune strip mining their own country into a grey moonscape. Today they can barely grow a thing, and they carry some of the highest diabetes rates ever recorded. It was all dug up to feed the crops of the rich world.

Nauru is a speck. Eight square miles of coral marooned in the open ocean. What made it briefly fabulous was bird droppings.

Over unimaginable stretches of time the seabirds turned the whole interior into some of the purest phosphate rock on earth. And phosphate is the one thing industrial crop farming cannot live without. Every field of wheat, every acre of veg, is quietly starving for phosphorus, and it has to be clawed out of the ground somewhere and shipped in.

Nauru was that somewhere. A mountain of plant food sitting in the sea, waiting to be devoured.

Mining began in 1906, hauled out cheaply for Britain, Australia and New Zealand while the Nauruans saw a pittance. It went onto the tired soils of Australian and New Zealand farms, forcing a few more bushels out of exhausted land.

Independence came in 1968. They bought the mine, and the whole river of money flowed to a population you could seat in a modest football stand. By the mid 1970s they were, per head, about the wealthiest nation on earth.

It was a curse in a blessing's clothing.

To reach the phosphate you strip the land to the bone. Four fifths of the island was chewed into a wasteland of bare coral pinnacles, uninhabitable, a dead zone the locals just call Topside. The money went as fast as it came, on imported everything and ventures of pure farce, including a West End musical about the love life of Leonardo da Vinci that shut almost as soon as it opened.

The phosphate ran dry around 2000. The trust funds meant to outlast the rock were gone with it.

What is left is a people stranded on a ruined rock that grows almost nothing, living on tinned meat, white rice, sugary drinks and fried everything, shipped from the far side of the world. One of the highest rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes ever measured. A whole nation made ill by the tin and the packet.

The island now takes Australian money to house an offshore detention camp. That tells you well enough how the story ended.

Now think about the animal they keep telling you is destroying the planet.

A cow needs no mine on the far side of the world. She grazes the grass the rain already grew, and she fertilises the ground as she goes, dung and hoof and time closing the loop she was born into. Grass fed to a ruminant asks nothing of a strip mine.

The crop asks for everything. And somewhere out of sight, a place like Nauru pays the bill.
