It's a scandal that Scotland has abundant cheap energy generation but instead of selling it cheaply, windfarms get paid London prices to turn off.
As a result Scotland has the most expensive electricity in the world.
Our screwed up system is unjustifiable, and easy to fix...
It’s Dyslexia Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is ‘What’s Your Story?’, so I wanted to give you a little bit of an insight into how I overcome my own struggles on a daily basis. It’s all about finding your own path, your own way of solving a problem.
📚Reading and writing have always been a challenge for me, but they’re a massive part of what I do. I actually dictated my first cookbook 25 years ago, and that’s also how Billy and the Giant Adventure was born – me recording stories that then got transcribed for me to edit from. I now work with some brilliant editors, people who understand how my brain works and are great at helping me get things down on paper.
📚With the Billy books, I’ll work in a room with pictures and Post-It notes all over the wall to help me see the story come to life, and with recipes I’m there in the kitchen cooking, while my editor captures the words. I think it’s about finding someone you can pair up with who is good at the thing you’re not, and seeing if you can swap talents.
I like to say ‘Always forward, never straight’, to remind me that as long as you're progressing, it doesn’t matter how you’re doing it. So what’s your way? I’d love to hear your stories so let me know in the comments! Big love xxxx
Steve Jobs explains the importance of both thinking and doing
“The doers are the major thinkers. The people who really create the things that change this industry are both the thinker-doer in one person.”
This is applicable outside of tech too, and he uses Leonardo da Vinci as an example:
“Did Leonardo have a guy off to the side that was thinking five years into the future about what he would paint or the technology he would use to paint it? Of course not. Leonardo was the artist, but he also mixed his own paints. He also was a fairly good chemist and knew about pigments and human anatomy. Combining all of those skills together—the art and the science, the thinking and the doing—is what resulted in the exceptional result… There is no difference in our industry. The people that have really made the contributions have been the thinkers and the doers.”
Jobs speculates that one of the reasons people mix this up is because it’s easy to take credit for the thinking:
“It’s very easy for someone to say ‘I thought of this three years ago.’ But usually when you dig a little deeper you find that the people who really did it were also the people who worked through the hard intellectual problems.”
