Amid roiling controversy about scientific integrity and a boycott of @AmDiabetesAssn, the association's chief scientific officer has left abruptly and without explanation. This raises more questions than it answers.

I was walking through Boston when I found myself cheering out loud for Yale.

Yes, Yale.

Its new report did something almost unthinkable for an elite university: honestly confronted some of academia’s biggest problems.

I was thrilled. And then I made a terrible mistake.

I always considered myself a well-rounded person. Then I got a PhD and became an expert on a topic that only 7 people understand. Four of them think I’m an idiot.

“Every relevant medical society recommends against screening asymptomatic men for testosterone deficiency, because it is akin to scouring a hotel room with a black light: you’re going to find a lot of stuff of indeterminate significance that you wish you hadn’t seen.”

Trump's disinhibition has gotten markedly worse in the last couple of weeks. In my latest @washingtonsun column, I've compiled his (and his administration's) pre-midterm crescendo of crazy, from Ukraine to Jon Husted's ass. https://t.co/zi6sgUlEPd

Two wrongs make a right when it comes to incivility

Retaliatory incivility (i.e., incivility in response to someone else's incivility) is seen as less morally condemnable than initial incivility.

This may create a vicious circle of conflict, as each side responds with greater incivility.

@DavidandersonJd I prefer a more bridge-building tone.... But I understand the sentiment!

And I look forward to adding to my vocabulary. 😉

I've researched this deeply and written about it in my column. It affects my life because I've been a smoker since birth. It took me 14 years to get my hands on cigarettes and then 30 years to switch to safe vaping.

Sally Satel @slsatel ⬇️ is one of the smartest intellectuals you'll find on a variety of issues including transplants. I adore her.😍

People find it hard to measure risk: They see smoke or vapor and think it's all the same thing. It is not.

Patient I saw today has been my patient for almost 8 years.

They were not well then: oxygen needed and potential lung transplant.
So, we got to work on helping them.

Today, they saw me after a trip through Europe, OFF of oxygen. This was a trip they had put off for years due to her lungs 🥹

So proud. An honor to be someone’s doctor and invest in them 💪

Such clear, powerful, and important messages about the importance of improving the fidelity and comprehensiveness of our data collection methods if we want better science and policy.
