Jesus in Jerusalem Day 5:
Back in Bethany, Jesus dispatches Peter and John to Jerusalem, instructing them to look for a man carrying a jug of water who, Jesus says, will lead them to an upper room.
Gathered in the room, Jesus washes the apostles' feet, saying, "unless I wash you, you have no part with me." Once done, Jesus says, "you are clean, though not every one of you."
Jesus predicts one of the 12 will betray him. Judas responds defensively, "Surely, you don’t mean me, Rabbi?"
"You have said so," Jesus responds.
As they eat, Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to the disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
Jesus takes a cup of wine, prays over it, and says, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Jesus dips the bread into wine and gives it to Judas. As Judas accepts the bread, Satan enters Judas.
Jesus predicts his imminent physical death, saying, "I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom."
Before leaving the upper room, Jesus prays the intercessory prayer, including:
"I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I’m coming to you. Protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one."
They then leave for the Garden of Gethsemane. On the way, Jesus says each of them will leave him that night. Peter protests that he will not. "This very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times," Jesus tells Peter.
In the garden, Jesus moves "a stone's throw" away from the disciples, where he undergoes the agony in the garden, the first of the stations in the Scriptural Way of the Cross.
During Jesus' agony in the garden (Luke 22:44), "he prayed more earnestly and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood."
"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak," Jesus says (Matthew 26:40). The disciples fall asleep, but an angel from heaven appears to Jesus and strengthens him.
After three episodes of prayer, Jesus returns to the apostles, awakens them, and says:
"Behold, the hour is at hand and the son of man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying me is near."
