Xander Zayas vs Jaron “Boots” Ennis 🥊

Puerto Rico built El Morro to keep danger outside the walls. Philadelphia built Eastern State Penitentiary to make sure there was no way out. Tonight, Xander Zayas isn’t defending a fortress. He’s walking into a prison.

People think Boots beats you with speed. Or power. Or athleticism. No. Those are just the guards at the front gate. The real prison begins when he starts taking away your choices.

One exit disappears. Then another. Then another. Until the ring doesn’t feel like twenty feet anymore. It feels like a cell.

Look, I expect the first half of this fight to be competitive. Zayas has an outstanding jab. Excellent feet. Underrated slickness. He’s disciplined. He usually gets in, takes what he wants and gets out of the pocket before the alarm sounds.

Against almost everyone else, that’s enough.

Against Boots…every escape route gets photographed. Filed away. Remembered.

Boots isn’t chasing Xander. He’s mapping him. Every pivot. Every turn. Every habit. He’s building a blueprint of the prison while Xander still thinks he’s exploring the building. By the middle rounds, the doors start locking.

If I’m in Boots’ corner, I’m not headhunting. I’m attacking the body like a corrections officer taking away privileges.

Take the legs. Take the air. Take the freedom. Because once those legs stop carrying Xander to safety, every exchange becomes mandatory instead of optional.

If I’m in Zayas’ corner, I’m saying one thing. Don’t let him close the doors.

Jab. Turn. Reset. Never leave through the same exit twice. Because once Boots knows where you’re going, he gets there before you do. That’s when the prison closes.

One thing that worries me for Zayas is his chin. I’ve seen him buzzed by fighters who don’t possess anywhere near Boots’ firepower. That’s dangerous. Because if Boots catches him clean, you can almost hear it…

CLANG!!

That cold, steel prison door closing. If Ennis lands the way I think he can, the only thing louder than that steel echo will be the heartbreak in the arena - the silence… the hands over mouths…the tears streaming down faces of the Puerto Rican faithful that came to celebrate the coronation of a young king and instead watched him meet the executioner of expectations.

The key for Xander is movement with variation. Never retreat in straight lines. Never exit using the same door twice. Because Boots is one of those rare fighters who solves patterns frighteningly fast.

He downloads tendencies the way elite chess players memorize openings. Show him the same escape route three times and by the fourth, he’s already standing at the exit waiting for you.

That’s why I believe Xander’s power becomes the hidden variable.

Can he earn Boots’ respect? Personally, I don’t he will.

And here’s where I think the fight changes. Boots has something that very few fighters possess. Closing speed. Not hand speed. Closing speed.

This actually reminds me of a young, immensely talented fighter stepping into the ring with a prime Roy Jones Jr. Not stylistically, but athletically. Roy had this frightening ability to erase distance from outside punching range without warning. Boots possesses a similar explosiveness. Blink and the fight has moved from a chess match to a fire alarm.

If Zayas finds success early then I expect the commentators to start mentioning the upset.

Then gradually…

Boots starts arriving at the end of Xander’s exits instead of chasing them. The body work begins paying dividends. The combinations become shorter. The reactions slower.

Even if Trae isn’t the “franchise player” (the #1 overall pick this year will be), he is the player that can help usher in the new era

He has the playmaking and playoff experience to make a significant difference on this roster and he will help set the table with his passing to make life easier for his teammates, helping the rookies and young players with their development
