Did anyone notice that Omukama Rukarabasaiija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV did not have a Western name such as Edward, John, Patrick, etc., names that we rather erroneously call “Christian names”?

Yet his late father had several: Omukama Rukarabasaiija Patrick David Mathew Kaboyo Rwamuhokya Olimi III.

What makes this even more interesting is that we are told the young King was a devoted Christian something evident from his numerous speeches, in which he frequently referred to biblical teachings.

So, what exactly makes a name “Christian”? Must a Christian abandon an African name and acquire a European one before his or her Christianity becomes credible?

Perhaps the more uncomfortable question is this: did Christianity really require us to change our names or did colonialism simply teach us to mistake European names for Christian ones?

Perhaps, this is one of the lessons, we have learnt from this young King. We still hear if Churches which refuse to baptized children, because, the children's names are "not Christian" enough.

I love the Baganda culture of the Kabaka belonging to his mother's clan which removes the nonsense of one clan dominating royalty and ultimately claiming superiority over all other clans.

For instance, Kabaka Mutesa II belonged to the Nte (Cow) clan through his mother, Lady Irene Drusilla Namaganda, while his successor, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, belongs to the Nkima (Monkey) clan via his mother Namasole Sarah Nalule Kisosonkole, who came from the Nkima clan.

No wonder the majority of Baganda support and cherish the institution of the kingdom unlike other Ugandan nationalities who feel disenfranchised and alienated by their unfairly feudal systems that have no place in modern society.
