Why should only rickshaw-wallas learn Marathi?

Mumbai has Parsi colonies, Jain societies, Gujarati areas, Muslim areas, Tam-Brahm population... where I can promise you, a lot of people can't speak Marathi to save their life.

Migrants also work in corporate houses, banks, media, start-ups etc. Mumbai is a financial magnet and people from all over the country come here for work. Is Marathi not equally important for them as it is for UP-Bihar migrants?

You think these language warriors can walk into a Big-4 and round up senior managers / directors, and throw them out if they fail to speak Marathi?

Hushyari is always shown against the gareeb, because he can't fight back.

They will thrash rickshaw-wallahs in public, and no one will bat an eye. They will throw stones at their vehicles and cause huge damages but no one will file a case. They collect hafta from them, humiliate them, but they still keep at it for their families.

If they took panga with the rich in Mumbai, cases will be filed, political funding could get hampered, vote banks will be affected. So they show their might and dadagiri against the weak.

In a country where jobs are scarce, driving a rickshaw is one job where you just need an able body and a license. Language has never been a barrier either for the driver or the commuter to get from point A to B in Mumbai. I have lived all my life in this city.

But to create a made-up barrier out of nowhere and deny people jobs in a job scarce country, is exactly the kind of stupid and moronic thinking that could only come out of India.

May bhagwan give us some sadbuddhi.

This is precisely how civilisations surrender their intellectual inheritance: first you are told a text is irrelevant, then that defending it is regressive, and finally that the respectable thing to do is quietly abandon it.

Today it is Manusmriti. Tomorrow someone will drag a few verses out of the Ramcharitmanas and tell us Tulsidas has accumulated too much historical baggage to be defended. The day after that, someone will cherry-pick passages from the Vedas and demand that we distance ourselves from them as well.

Where exactly does this logic stop?

The Corpus Juris Civilis, compiled under Emperor Justinian I in the sixth century, belongs to a world radically different from modern Europe. Nobody argues that every provision in it should govern twenty-first-century society. Yet Roman law remains an object of serious study across universities because it is part of the intellectual ancestry of modern legal systems.

Civilised societies do not preserve old texts because they agree with every sentence in them. They preserve them because they refuse to become historical orphans.

I am not arguing that every injunction in Manusmriti must become law today. I am arguing against this astonishing proposition that once political activists have successfully demonised an ancient Indian work, Hindus themselves should concede the battlefield and announce: “Fine, this book is irrelevant anyway.”

Absolutely not.

Our Manishis produced an enormous civilisational corpus. Vedas, Upanishads, Dharmashastras, Itihasas, Puranas, philosophical schools, commentaries and countless other works. They should be read, preserved, debated, contextualised, criticised where necessary, and defended against dishonest caricature.

We cannot allow our relationship with our own intellectual heritage to be dictated by whoever shouts the loudest against it.

If its popular image has been constructed through selective quotations, polemics, mistranslations or political campaigns, then challenging that image is exactly what scholarship is supposed to do. History is not a public-relations verdict that becomes permanently binding once enough activists repeat it.

A civilisation that becomes embarrassed by its books every time someone attacks them will eventually be left with no books worth defending and no civilisation worth inheriting.

धन के देखभाल एवं प्रबंधन के लिए मनुस्मृति ने स्त्रियों पर विश्वास जताया है। राजा को मनुस्मृति आदेश देती है कि ऐसी स्त्रियों की रक्षा करे जिनके पति बाहर हैं, जिनका परिवार प्रभावशाली नहीं है, जो बीमार हैं या जिनके पति या पुत्र नहीं हैं। अगर कोई संबंधी भी किसी स्त्री की संपत्ति हड़पता है तो उसे चोर मानकर दंड देने को कहा है। इससे अधिक परवाह है आपको स्त्रियों की?

पति को आदेश है कि बाहर जाने से पहले पत्नी की आजीविका की व्यवस्था करके जाए। अब ये मत कहिएगा कि पत्नी ख़ुद नहीं कर सकती क्या। जीवेच्छिल्पैरगर्हितैः। आगे ये भी लिखा है कि पति न करे तो स्त्री ख़ुद सम्मानजनक कार्यों के जरिए कमाए। आत्मनिर्भरता के लिए इससे बेहतर नियम बना लेंगे आप?

तस्मात्साधारणो धर्मः श्रुतौ पत्न्या सहोदितः। धार्मिक कार्य पति-पत्नी साथ मिलकर करें। पत्नी के बिना कोई अनुष्ठान पूरा नहीं होता है। हमारे यहाँ पत्नी को बेगम नहीं, अर्धांगिनी कहा गया है। यहीं से निकला है 'आधी आबादी'। पूरे पचास प्रतिशत - उतना ही, जितना पुरुष का हिस्सा। पचास-पचास। इससे अधिक सटीक तरीके से बराबरी का सन्देश दे सकते हैं आप? अन्योन्यस्य। एक-दूसरे के प्रति। वैवाहिक जीवन में भी दोनों की ज़िम्मेदारियाँ हैं। मनुस्मृति कहती है कि न स्त्री और न ही पुरुष वैवाहिक मर्यादा का उल्लंघन करे। इसमें क्या जोड़ देंगे आप क्रांतिकारी कहलाने के लिए? कुछ बाक़ी है क्या? मनुस्मृति कहती है कि नियम दोनों पर हैं।

मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को महाभागाः (सौभाग्यशालिनी और सौभाग्य लाने वाली) कहा। मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को पूजार्हाः (सम्मान की अधिकारी) कहा। मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को गृहदीप्तयः (घर को प्रकाशित और प्रसन्न रखने वाली) कहा। परिवार के सुख का आधार कहा। गृहस्थ-जीवन का प्रत्यक्ष आधार कहा।

अब जिसने परिवार नामक संस्था को ख़त्म करने का लक्ष्य ले रखा हो, उसे ये सब बुरा लगेगा ही। वो पूछेगा कि स्त्री परिवार के सुख के लिए तिनका भी क्यों हिलाए। वो ये नहीं पूछेगा कि मनुस्मृति ने पुरुष को भी स्त्री के भरण-पोषण की ज़िम्मेदारी उठाने को क्यों कहा है।

यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते… रटा-रटाया है, इसीलिए इसे नहीं गिनाया। सबको पता है। इसी प्रसङ्ग में ये भी लिखा है कि जिस घर में स्त्री दुःखी रहती है वह परिवार शीघ्र नष्ट होता है। यानी, परिवार की स्थिति का पैमाना यह तय कर दिया गया है कि उसमें महिलाओं को प्रसन्न रखा जा रहा है या नहीं।

लेकिन नहीं, गाली तो केवल मनुस्मृति को ही पड़ेगी। क़ुरान और बाइबिल का नाम नहीं लिया जाएगा। राहुल गाँधी आज 'स्त्रीवादी' बने हैं, काश मनुस्मृति पढ़ लिया होता कम से कम। पढ़ा तो हमने भी नहीं है, इसीलिए जो कहा जाता है मान लेते हैं। सफाई देने लगते हैं कि ये उस समय की व्यवस्था थी।

मनुस्मृति से अधिक फेमिनिज्म और कहीं नहीं है। फ़िलहाल इस इकोसिस्टम के लिए तो फेमिनिज्म सिर्फ़ अश्लीलता और अंग-प्रदर्शन ही है।
