I saw a post saying "learn Python now because n8n agents will be useless and not scalable very soon."
And I think there's a category mix-up happening that's worth clearing up...
especially for people learning AI, automation, or AI engineering right now..
I have commented.. but I think there's need for this post..
First, let's separate the roles (this is where most confusion starts)
I think people are blending Automation, AI Engineering, and Software Engineering into one bucket..
then arguing from different angles..
They're related, but they are not the same job..
#1 Automation / Orchestration
this involves connecting systems, triggering workflows, handling retries, moving data, coordinating tools..
the tools includes: n8n, Zapier, make, etc..
#2 AI / Agent Engineering
this invloves building agent logic, memory, reasoning, model interaction, neural networks, transformers..
and the tools includes: Python, PyTorch, LangGraph, custom APIs
#3 Software Engineering
this invloves architecture, performance, scalability, infrastructure, testing, deployment..
you see, when you mix these roles, you end up blaming the wrong layer..
What n8n actually is..
n8n is an orchestration layer..
Think of it like a traffic controller at an airport..
It doesn’t build the airplane engine..
It coordinates when, how, and what moves..
So expecting n8n to be:
+ a long-running autonomous agent
+ a deeply stateful AI brain
+ a multi-agent runtime
…is like expecting Docker to write your app logic or Kubernetes to design your product..(sorry if you don't get the terms)
that's a wrong responsibility..
Now, are n8n agents "not scalable"?
They are scalable, within their role.
n8n scales:
+ workflows
+ integrations
+ triggers
+ retries
+ queues
+ system coordination..
It runs on Docker, queues, workers, Kubernetes.. enterprises already use it..
What it does not scale well is:
+ acting as the permanent runtime for complex agent brains
+ long-lived conversational state
+ heavy AI logic
but to me, that's not even a weakness..
That's design..
Where Python fits (and this is important)
Yes, learning Python is powerful..
Yes, AI relies on transformers, neural networks, and Python tooling..
Yes, python is:
a stepping stone into AI engineering
a way to build custom logic
a way to extend systems beyond no/low-code
Python + n8n is such a strong combo..
Saying "n8n agents will be useless" is like saying:
Excel is useless because it can't run a backend
Docker is useless because you still need code..
Tools don't fail..
Mental models do..
Learn Python, absolutely..
Use n8n, absolutely..
Just don't confuse what a tool is for with what you personally want to build.. or goal you want to achieve..
