Can Big Pharma merge its way to innovation?

In my latest Life Science Leader guest column, I argue that while mega-mergers may create scale and cost synergies, they don't solve the industry's biggest challenge: innovation.

The next generation of breakthrough medicines will come from companies that partner with, invest in and acquire pioneering biotech- not simply become larger.

This year, Sofinnova celebrates 50 years of partnering with visionary entrepreneurs to advance breakthrough science and help bring innovative therapies to patients.

For five decades, we've backed founders and scientists tackling some of the world's greatest healthcare challenges. We're proud of what we've accomplished together, and we're even more excited about what's ahead as scientific innovation continues to accelerate.

Here's to the next chapter of discovery, partnership, and impact.

We have entered a new world, one that won’t be defined by borders, but by innovation. Medical need has always been global. Biomedical innovation has now become global as well and patients deserve the best medications irregardless of where the innovation was sourced. Last week I spoke on an IPO panel and the closing plenary #BIO2026, to share my thoughts about the current market. Great to connect with colleagues, and the energy and optimism in the room was inspiring.

Thanks to the WSJ Pro Venture Capital team for the conversation. Excited by AI’s potential to help move good science faster toward patients, especially in clinical development. The opportunity is global, but I believe the fundamentals still win: strong biology, patient impact, and great teams.

What does the future hold for biotech? The cures available for a patient should be independent of where the innovation was sourced from. I was honored to join BIO’s panel last Thursday: “BIO 2026: Patients, patents, and biotech’s next decade.”

Thanks to the esteemed panel: Sarah Alspach who chaired the panel (BIO);,Stephen Thirstrup MD, PhD; (European Medicines Agency), Fred Lewis-Hall MD (ex-Pfizer); Rachel Haurwitz PhD; (Caribou), Kinnari Patel PharmD (RTW); Elizabeth Schwartzback PhD (Bighat); and me, James Healy (Sofinnova.)

This next chapter of our industry will be written by us all. Let’s put patients and innovation at the forefront.

What does the sixth decade of biotech look like? After 25 years as a biotech investor, Jim Healy, MD, PhD, Managing Partner at Sofinnova Investments, explains why this is a terrific time to be in the industry. Hear his perspective from this week's #BIO2026 session on shaping biotech's next chapter.

Excited to be taking the stage at #BIO2026 in just a few minutes for the panel “Shaping Biotech’s 6th Decade: A Worldview on What’s Next” at 11:30am.

As biotech enters its next era, the opportunity and responsibility to rethink how we innovate, invest, and collaborate has never been greater. Looking forward to a thoughtful discussion on where the industry is headed and how we can help shape what comes next.

If you’re at BIO, join us for an incredible lunch session!
