an important question on the West Philippine Sea issue:
Why did China start its reclamation projects in the South China Sea only during President Aquino’s (PNoy) time, after PNoy approved the US military to reestablish bases inside the Philippines under EDCA, and Manila suing China in the PCA?
Vietnam and the Philippines have reclaimed features and built military installations decades before China. If China really wanted to invade the Philippines, why did it not do it earlier?
The answer is simple:
China knows that American submarines armed with nuclear warheads are swimming under the South China Sea. It can strike China or choke its trade routes as the US has done to over a dozen countries, anytime without warning if the US wants to. China needs those islands to be their first line of defense from American aggression.
It's no secret that the US is not happy that China is now a super-power and the most productive industrial country in the world with the real possibility of overtaking America, if not already in several economic indicators. It's also no secret the US was the one who armed, trained and deployed the Hamas itself the Mujahadeen-turned Taliban, the ISIS, and other terrorist groups in the Middle East as a proxy player to attack uncooperative oil-rich countries.
China is not interested in invading the Philippines.
The whole Philippine economy is roughly half a percent of China’s annual economic growth. With regard to the South China Sea, China’s interest is survival and counting US military envelopement, it is protecting their nation from US threats and stranglehold.
During the ISIS-terrorist siege of Marawi, it was China and Russia that donated emergency weapons that saved our Filipino soldiers. This was upon the request of President Duterte after the US and EU blocked arms purchases by the Philippines.
During the height of the pandemic, it was China that donated billions worth of medical supplies and millions of vaccines that saved countless of our frontliners. The US only sent significant doses after Secretary Lloyd Austin visited the Philippines and Duterte withdrew his threat of terminating the VFA, adding the early pardon of US marine Pemberton.
Why did the US that is supposed to be our ally deny the delivery of life saving arms and vaccines when our people needed them the most?
And this was not the first time, as the US abandoned the Philippines during the Scarborough Shoal crisis and also repeatedly betrayed our claims on Sabah, where we have land ownership titles, not mere maritime rights. Juan Ponce Enrile also revealed that the US denied the Philippines request for 2,000 armalites during the height of the insurgencies during the time of Marcos Senior.
But in the US vs. China competition or possibly even conflict, we have no business taking sides. Our business is to help our own countrymen. And to know how to develop and manage the cycles of friendship and conflicts that wash over nations over time, it is a long game with many dimensions.
