The pigment factory that created this waste pit was closed in 2003, and left behind 714 acres of radioactive iron oxide waste. Find me on Bluesky https://t.co/7s7Z8nyq21 for the full story. This profile will be taken down soon.

Wimbee Creek and the Combahee River. Clouds parted and gave us this beautiful light. By showing the world from the air, Southwings allows us to see the forest, not just the trees. Help me support @Southwings https://t.co/UGJF5w226C

Hydro-fracking operators often lease land from locals, who are not always aware of the true scale of the operation when they sign the leases. The tremendous water use, and potential for long-term water contamination are additional externalities of the natural gas boom.
This area, near Wolf Lake in New York State, was slated to be opened for gas extraction, which would decimate the local ecosystem as it has elsewhere. Fortunately a coordinated opposition stopped fracking in New York State.
Despite the accelerating climate crisis, America's liquid natural gas export capacity is expected to more than double over the next four years. Exported US LNG rarely displaces fossil fuels abroad, instead competing with renewable alternatives (NRDC).

Gas flaring, or the open-air burning of excess gas, occurs as a routine measure to stabilize the pressure of gas systems and in emergencies for depressurization. As the burn is conducted in open air, flaring releases huge amounts of harmful greenhouse gases.
