Connect: p68 "our minds pick up a lot of what's out there, & it seems nearly impossible to resist the pull towards culturally rooted stereotypes." For example, society associates STEM careers with men. Only 30% of STEM characters on tv & in movies are women. #T3Learns#blindspot
I’m proud to have portrayed a #womaninSTEM and strive to be a role model for young women to become future scientists.
Women make up ONLY 30% of STEM characters on the screen. My friends at The @GDIGM want to change this because, as Geena says, “If she can SEE it, she can BE it.”

If we, as educators, wonder why bother with IAT:
p.70 "Knowledge is indeed power, and self-knowledge achieved by taking the IAT can exert its power by unsettling existing views of one's mind. If that happens ... the IAT indeed will be useful."
Quote part 2 of 2 p70 "From there it is at least partly up to each individual to use that knowledge to move beyond dismay & to find ways to understand hidden bias & to naturalize them before they translate into behavior" #T3Learns#slowchat#blindspot
Quote part 1 of 2 p70 "what can the IAT do...bring the dissonance between reflective & automatic preferences into conscious awareness." #T3Learns#slowchat#blindspot
Monday Phrase -p59 “The theory of cognitive dissonance tells us that becoming aware of conflicts between our beliefs and our actions, or between two simultaneously coexisting beliefs, violates the natural human striving for mental harmony, or consonance.” #T3Learns#SlowChat
Quote: Pg 61 "We don't have the expectation that we ought to be aware of the working of all of our bodily functions, but we do believe that we have -or should have- superior access to the stuff inside our minds." #T3Learns#Slowchat#Blindspot
Challenge: I think the hardest part for many people is cognitive dissonance. They may believe one thing but when presented with evidence that goes against what they may believe - will they be willing to make a change? #slowchat#T3Learns#blindspot
I took several of the IATs & my automatic preferences revealed some hidden bias. Hoping now I am aware of my bais I can use this uncomfortable new knowledge to improve interactions w my students & people in general. Will you use the link below to try some of the tests? #T3Learns
Challenge: Consider other implicit association tests. How can this knowledge make me a better person? A better teacher? https://t.co/CNl0qlXTRq #T3Learns#SlowChat

"The mind is an automatic association-making machine...unthinkingly we share that association as we remember the past...such a memory error is called a false alarm-we mistakenly remember something that did not occur" page 9 #T3Learns#Blindspot#slowchat

Algebra 1 students used a heart rate monitor hooked to @TICalculators to graph their heart rate. Then we found the domain & range of our graphs. The librarian @AmberReadsALot even came & let us teach her how to find the domain & range of her heart rate!
T3 Gulf Coast Professional Development Summit...saving pets from hot cars(& planes) by building a pet car alarm programmed by our @TICalculators &#TIInnovator hubs! The greenhouse effect can make a car unsafe even when its only 65°F!
Learning to code on the @TICalculators#TIInnovator hub at T3 Gulf Coast Professional Development Summit.
We have light!
We have color!
Next is sound!
Thanks @afisherteach @ccsrygle for the fun session!
Earned our @TICalculators#TIInnovator Rover licenses! Love to see the Ss unpack their thinking. Some guess & check, others measure everything & plan on paper first, one programmed all the directions (forward/backward/left/right) then went back & added the measurements.
I had drawers full of games&puzzles in my class for yrs but it was hard to get Ss interested. This yr I added a puzzle board & created puzzle bingo where Ss get credit for completing puzzles/games. They love it! A favorite are the puzzles I post on my door. Thnks @mathequalslove
We had a busy 3 day week before the rain canceled school...
Slope Battles in Algebra Lab, Algebraic Transformations Quick Poll in Algebra 2, started earning our Rover driver's license in Engineering.
Algebra 2 students used CBR motion detectors & @TICalculators to graph paths of balls.
S1: why did the parabola from 2 balls open up & from 1 ball open down?
S2: it opens down b/c you dropped the ball before I pressed start so it caught the ball on the bounce back up then down
@rachaelhgorsuch Here is a list of other activities where students can earn materials by just completing wrksht problems. It's an easy & fast way to bring a little Engineering into the math class.
Ready for Friday...
-solving equations with algebra tiles in Algebra 1
-domain & range domino chains in Algebra 2
-functions random run game in Algebra EOC Lab
-areospace vocabulary bingo in Engineering
