thrilled to announce we have built the “trick old people into handing over their bank passwords machine” from the classic sci-fi horror novel “don’t build the trick old people into handing over their bank passwords machine”
My wife and I have let our child have some truly shameful amounts of TV some weekends but how do you manage 4 hours of daily screen time for a 3 year old?
The obvious outcome of this misguided law is that fewer landlords will allow dogs. The inability of @RobertWhite_DC and many other councilmembers to think through even the most rudimentary secondary effects of regulation is baffling.
Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan says the Fed likely will need to raise rates by at least another 50 bps to ensure inflation doesn’t settle above the central bank’s 2% goal.
Logan said those additional increases, together with September’s, would merely reverse the three cuts the Fed made last year. She said the Fed needs to set interest rates at a modestly restrictive level, a threshold that remains uncertain and could require even more increases.
Logan drew a distinction on the run-up in bond yields. To the extent higher Treasury yields reflect expectations of a more aggressive Fed, those increases “don’t do our work for us,” she said.
But if the increase in yields is driven by rising term premiums, or the extra compensation investors demand to hold longer-term debt, the moves “can slow the economy, reducing the need to tighten monetary policy.” https://t.co/7CR3iduR5s
INBOX: Sen. Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) introduced legislation to ensure political appointees in the federal government do not earn a salary higher than members of Congress.
"If you’re paid by taxpayers, you shouldn’t make more than those who were elected by taxpayers," he said
Its been the case for a while, but journalism school should be an undergraduate degree (because why not?) or 1-year, practical experience focused masters at absolute best. You can't possibly justify a 2-year grad program.
NEW: The Columbia Journalism School is pausing admissions for its Master of Arts degree amid a “critical evaluation” of the M.A. curriculum, Dean Jelani Cobb announced in a Thursday afternoon email to alumni.
I think DC absolutely needs to improve its bike infrastructure, because our half-committed status quo is not good.
But this kind of thing is why I don’t think it’s a substitute for cracking down on bad riders.
Wrote for Citycast DC about how the city turned Lime and other shared scooter/ebikes into a public nuisance and safety debacle. Molly’s horror story is worse than mine. https://t.co/ehpDtftHoX
You should in fact read this.
The core idea is that no deal should ever be done that gives any wins to the fossil fuel industry, meaning that no politically realistic deal will ever be good enough and we'll just never get the transmission changes we need to build renewables.
This law is intended to make it easier to find pet-friendly housing by making it illegal for landlords to limit the breed and/or size of pets that can live in their properties.
It will almost certainly have the opposite effect as landlords adopt blanket "no pets" policies.
Future population projections expect that fertility rates stop declining and roughly stabilize.
This new NBER paper asks what evidence we have to expect this. It finds there is none. "Instead, where and when fertility has fallen low, it has tended to keep falling."

In 2022, James Talarico signed a pledge "not to accept a dime of fossil fuel money."
On Sat, his campaign was told it had 1 week to return $36k in donations from oil execs & lobbyists to avoid the No Fossil Fuel's "wall of shame."
Talarico's campaign tells us he's keeping it.
