The 143rd World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was commemorated with great enthusiasm at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Tawang, bringing together district officials, healthcare professionals, and community representatives to reaffirm their commitment toward a TB-free society.
The programme was graced by ZPC Tawang @LekiGombu, Deputy Commissioner Tawang @NamgyalAngmo,IAS and Additional Deputy Commissioner Tawang @rinchinleta. Also present were DMO Dr. Thupten Lhamu, DRCHO-cum-DTO Dr. Rinchin Neema, Medical Superintendent, KDS District Hospital Dr. Tenzin Kunga, along with SMOs, MOs, HWOs, PRI members, and Gaon Burahs.
Addressing the gathering, the DC highlighted that although the prevalence of TB in Tawang is relatively low, sustained awareness and proper treatment are essential to eliminate the disease entirely. She informed that the district now has 32 TB Mukt Panchayats, an increase from 29 last year. Urging Gaon Burahs and PRI members to actively disseminate information, she called upon the public to come forward for testing and support the mission of a TB-free society.
ZPC Leki Gombu emphasized the importance of proactive awareness campaigns and noted that Panchayats and Gaon Burahs play a crucial role in spreading information at the grassroots level. He encouraged PRI members to actively educate villagers and also stressed the need to promote routine vaccination programmes. Demonstrating his commitment, he expressed willingness to adopt a TB patient.
Earlier, Medical Superintendent Dr. Tenzin Kunga delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation covering the history of TB, its societal impact, and the role of citizens in eliminating the disease.
In his welcome address, DRCHO-cum-DTO Dr. Rinchin Neema expressed gratitude to frontline health workers for their tireless efforts. He cautioned that even a single TB-positive case has the potential to spread infection widely if not controlled. He further informed that Tawang has achieved 11 Gold, 14 Silver, and 7 Bronze TB Mukt Gram Panchayats, recognized with Mahatma Gandhi statues and commendation certificates—Gold for three consecutive years without TB cases, Silver for two years, and Bronze for one year. Currently, only nine patients are under DOTS treatment in the district.

The Cabinet approved strengthening of diagnostic services across Arunachal Pradesh through HLL Lifecare Ltd, including creation of laboratory infrastructure and implementation of a digital Laboratory Information Management System in all health facilities. These initiatives will improve access to quality diagnostics, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and enhance patient care.

The Himalayas have a long history of innovative engineering, with iron-chain suspension bridges existing here centuries before such methods appeared elsewhere.

The historic Chakzam Bridge at Mogto, traditionally attributed to a Buddhist Monk Thangtong Gyalpo and constructed in the 15th century, stands as an important example of indigenous engineering and community-oriented infrastructure.

Reviewed the master plan for development of the proposed tourist and heritage centre around the Chakzam Bridge at Mogto, envisioned as a community-first heritage model.
