P'Aof: & that scene, that scene was like... it's like Fourth, in his role as Tanrak, already had a certain answer in his head when he read the script. Like, he had already made his choice. He chose to, like, cut everything else out. It’s like, with all the various situations that happened before, he felt there was no other way out, so what he had to choose was this one specific path. He had that kind of mindset in his head
: No matter how Gem played it, he felt like, "Tanrak isn't choosing him, Phi'." "Tanrak doesn't love me at all. Tanrak isn't choosing me." In the first few takes we shot, he said that he felt Tanrak had... I mean, through their acting chemistry, he could feel that Tanrak already had an answer. "I feel like Tanrak isn't choosing me at all."
: So, we separated them to brief them individually. We briefed them separately. Because of that, the dialogue that goes, "Don't you love me at all? After everything we've been through?" wasn't actually in the script. It was something completely unscripted. (😳)
: But we felt, it actually makes sense. When Gem, in his role as Barth, shared that he felt this way, I thought, "Then just ask it." If you feel like, Tanrak already had his own answer, I think Barth can just go ahead & ask, "Don't you love me at all?" because Barth is someone who can deliver that question & is ready to ask it. And the answer that Tanrak gave back was also something he improvised on the spot right then (😳😳)
Interviewer: Meaning you briefed them separately, & you didn't tell them that this question would come up during the shoot?
P'Aof: yes, exactly. That's the kind of... well, for me, just like what he asked me, this is the magic of their chemistry & how well they understand each other.
: And it's the magic of having a director who initiates it, too
: Oh, that's absolutely incredible.
P'Aof: Yeah, because that day I was thinking, "Oh, what should we do here?" you know? All these things I'm telling you are part of the working process. It means it's a normal thing where we have to adjust & fine-tune things together anyway. So I felt, hey, it's really interesting that the kids shared this feeling. Like, "Tanrak doesn't love me, P'Aof. I feel like Tanrak has his own answer & it's like he isn't going with me." So we had to be like, "Oh, really? Okay." We took that realization in order to hit the exact point we wanted most from what we originally wrote in the script. That's the fun part of this project.

: we’d have to give it to two people. truly both of them deserved the award. its like, how do i even put it? how precise and alive can someone’s acting be? it goes beyond micro-acting.. these kids are extraordinary

phi aof: i could sense that they would give a good performance after we had done workshops and worked together. but i didnt think it would be to that extent, to that level to the point where the audience could really feel it too. during the time we were working on this, i pulled myself back to become a viewer and i was like, “woooo these nongs is so good.”
: they are amazing!

phi aof: and they balanced each other. they acted together. its really acting together (😭👏🏻)
: that’s the important thing
: this is the reason why the award has to be given to two people. bc one person act very delicately, in very tiny details, without needing dialogue, acting through the inner muscles, something like that, like layers of emotion. but the other person act in a way that is bigger than other people. like barth’s acting... im dy!ng..

talking about the storage room scenes and phi aof was soooooo happy and satisfied bc it was one take!!

: as i had written and told yall before. actually the script only had about two lines. after they finished kissing eo, kiss on the cheek. it was only two lines saying that tanrak started to feel shaken, started to lose control of himself, started to become emotionally stirred up. two lines, only about two lines. And those two lines could be interpreted into the scene design in so many different ways. so at that time i remember talking to the nongs first. we knew this scene would carry a lot of intensity in the performance, so we had to discuss what we imagined, what they felt comfortable with and where their boundaries were. for me this scene needed even more conversation than the kissing scene. the kissing scene had a very clear direction, the characters had already lost control and they kissed eo bc they needed an answer to their desire. but this scene was much more trembling, uncertain and emotionally charged than that

: that’s why it became a scene that required so much detail. i asked nongs how they felt, which part made them uncomfortable and how far they were comfortable going. i also explained what i imagined was happening in nongs heads. after that i let them explore the scene together. in the script, it wasnt even written that they had to kiss. but the they moved toward eo out of longing. they had arranged to meet during the only time they possibly could, to share a special moment together in a place hidden from everyone else. in that kind of space, anything could happen. some kind of crossing the line could reach that point. so i knew right away that this scene was not easy. how would they play it? how could it feel real and still fit this situation? so we spent a lot of time talking before they acted it out. how should it be?

: as i said, this story had always relied on performances that felt realistic, so we needed to bring the actors to that real emotional breaking point. we talked about what they felt and how they felt it. to put it simply, we had to tell them that there had to be desire toward eo. that is the most accurate word, there had to be desire between them

: but the challenge was how to present that desire in a way that felt right for this particular scene. so we let the actors try and explore it, while still giving them guidance about the emotional image i had in mind. we also rehearsed the blocking a little, including how the camera would capture the moment. and when i saw the performance that happened, i felt, “OHHHH i’m so lucky. so lucky. so lucky that i got to see this. that i got to lead them into a performance like this!!”

: it was only about one take. there was nothing in the performance that needed fixing. we shot it wide in one way and then when we moved into the closer shot that had to follow the emotion, we didnt need to adjust anything. no extra guidance, no pulling back. it came from the nongs spirit. their understanding of what the director wanted from this situation and their own understanding of how far they were comfortable going. we talked very openly, really from the heart. like i said, this scene was harder than a kiss.

: and this ep is much more exposing than taking off the clothes

: and when i saw that they were able to communicate that much to eo in that scene, i felt really happy. as someone who worked on it, i felt like we had succeeded. i was satisfied and as a viewer i also felt happy for the audience like woww

talking about the improvised i love you’s 😭👏🏻👏🏻

: the scene where they meet in front of the cave of mother marry, the final scene of ep5. at that time fourth had just come back from shooting scarlet heart and the he came in the morning and he was still clinging to that prince vibes. it was so funny bc he was like, “barth! came here!” (😹) calling barth and was pointing fingers, giving orders and everything, so that time we had to shake things up again

: and that scene it seemed like fourth and tanrak already had an answer in his head from the moment he read the script. it felt like tanrak had already made his choice. he had chosen to let go of everything. meaning after all the situations that had happened, he felt there was nowhere else to go and there was only one choice left for him. that was the mindset he was carrying in his head. and when nong gem played it, no matter how he played it, he already felt like tanrak didnt choose him. “phi tanrak doesnt love me at all. tanrak doesnt choose me.” (🥺😭) in the first few takes, he said something like, “i think tanrak has his own highest form of love.” he could feel that tanrak already had an answer or that tanrak hadnt chosen him at all (😭💔)

: so i separated them and briefed them again. i briefed them separately again. so the dialogue that says, “did you ever love me at all, after everything?” that wasnt in the script. it was something that wasnt in the script (😭👏🏻) bu i felt that it made sense. if barth through gem’s portrayal of tanrak sensed that tanrak already had an answer, then barth should be able to ask it directly, “did you ever love me at all?”

: bc barth was someone who can send that question out and is ready to ask it
: yes and tanrak’s answer was also something improvised in that moment
: so they were briefed separately and they werent told that this question would suddenly come up during the take?
: yes that is the magic of the scene. the exchange they receiving and responding to eo and the shared understanding between them
: its the kind of magic that happens when the director sets the emotional starting point clearly (kuddos phi aof 😭👏🏻)

: everything ive been describing is part of the working process. its normal for us to keep adjusting and refining things as we work. thats why i found it interesting when nong shared that feeling. he said something like, “eu tanrak doesnt love me phi aof☹️.. phi aof i feel like tanrak already has his own answer. it feels like he isnt choosing to go with me.”

: so we had to acknowledge that, okay we had use it to reach the emotional point we wanted most. the things the actor shared became part of what made the story interesting
