Last Friday, 23rd January, we celebrated an illustrious community member, Ms. Tecla Mapfumo, Founder of Weavana Centre for her outstanding dedication and contribution to the survival and well-being of children living with Cerebral Palsy.
As a new mother, Teclaโs baby was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a neurological disorder that causes motor disability in children, which is an extremely challenging condition to any family. In an era with limited information, and too few people to help, Tecla had to quit her full time job to take care of her child while relying on her baking skills to supplement her husbandโs income.
Along the way, she developed the courage to talk about her childโs condition and seek out families with similar challenges and mostly, she got single women as most fathers abandon the affected children.
Like Tecla, most mothers are forced to abandon their jobs and look after their vulnerable children and graciously, Tecla has equipped them with her skills, particularly baking and soap making. In addition, her awareness efforts have attracted a few partners who provided special mobile chairs for the children however, a lot more support is needed.
As he handed over the Vocational Award appreciating Ms. Tecla Mapfumo, PDG Ken Mugisha said; โAs a mother, you committed your time, shared resources, abandoned your professional career, to bring together those children who go through a lot of suffering to make sure that you can create impact their lives. Rotary is happy to celebrate you for using your vocational service to build a positive impact on this world.โ
