Diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS can develop over many years, with protein misfolding and clumping contributing to damage in the brain and nervous system. By the time symptoms appear, significant damage may already have occurred. Understanding how these changes begin could open new opportunities to detect and treat disease earlier.
@ARPA_H's new BIOGAMI program is tackling this challenge, investing up to $152 million over four years to understand how proteins become dysfunctional and develop ways to intervene. Six research teams, including those at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and UC Berkeley, will combine protein science and computational tools to develop new approaches to early detection and treatment. While the initial focus is neurodegenerative disease, the findings could eventually have applications in cancer, diabetes, and other conditions.

At A4LI, we're encouraged to see ARPA-H invest in understanding the underlying biology of disease. The earlier we can identify and address the processes that contribute to age-related conditions, the more opportunities researchers may have to change how these diseases are treated. We'll continue following BIOGAMI's progress and highlighting the work underway at ARPA-H to advance biomedical innovation.
This is absolutely the right approach by Winchester College. At school and university, access to all devices needs to be rationed if young people are to learn to read, think, calculate and write. Traditional cognitive skills are more not less important in the age of AI. https://t.co/qq3bsv2MAz
A group of paediatricians, speech therapists and eye specialists have called on the Education Secretary to slash the time children spend looking at screens in schools.
Dr Rebecca Foljambe, founder of Health Professionals for Safer Screens, is one of the signatories.
We were at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham last week, putting dementia firmly on the agenda.
Alongside @TotalPolitics, we hosted a panel exploring whether the UK is ready for the future of dementia care, including how we improve diagnosis, support the workforce and ensure innovation reaches people affected by dementia safely and fairly.
We were grateful to hear from Maria Higson, @GregoryStafford MP, Lord @JimBethell , Professor Paresh Malhotra, and our very own Jennifer Keen, discussing the big issues facing dementia today, but also sharing their hopes for the future.
A special thanks to those who attended and contributed to such important conversations surrounding dementia.

Exercise and remission from cancer: A randomized trial found 37% improved survival, 28% disease-free survival. But little is being done to incorporate in practice except @UPMC 1st health system covering "exercise oncology" program.

Smoking causes enormous preventable harm. ONS data released today shows smoking in England now under 10% with rapid falls in young adults. E-cigarette use no longer rising in people under 25. The figure below shows drop by age since 2011.

I have launched #TheBigFuture survey, for all children in England to tell me what it’s like to be a child today - changes they want to see in their communities, their biggest concerns & future hopes.

We're expanding testing for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) across England.
From today, SMA checks will start being added to the heel-prick test for newborns.
This is part of an evaluation gathering evidence for a permanent national screening programme.

£237 million and they couldn't even get matching railings. Another example of how, even in the most gold-plated expensive projects, beauty is not part of the equation, despite the massive impact it has on our wellbeing.
Child health in Wales is in a “shocking state,” with outcomes declining in many key areas, paediatricians have warned.
The RCPCH in Wales said that without urgent action “we risk raising one of the unhealthiest generations of children in decades”

Together with Stephen Fry, Colin McFarlane, David Cameron, Steve McQueen, Jeremy Clarkson and Nick Jones, I’ve written to the Health Secretary about prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer among men in Britain. It kills one man every 45 minutes, many after a diagnosis too late for treatment to succeed. Black men face a 1 in 4 lifetime risk, double that of the general population, and men whose fathers or brothers have had the disease face a similar threat.
In May the National Screening Committee refused to extend screening beyond a group of just 1,500 men with one specific genetic variant. Everyone else at high risk doesn't have guaranteed access to a test that could save their life. We believe that's wrong, and that the Secretary of State has both the evidence and the power to overturn the ruling.
More than 250 MPs from across the political spectrum have called for a targeted national screening programme, and over 100,000 people have signed petition demanding the same. A programme targeted at those at highest risk would cost £25 million a year, which is 0.01% of the NHS budget.
We are asking the Secretary of State to reconsider the Committee's recommendation and commit to a targeted national screening programme; to act now, rather than wait a decade for further trial data while men continue to die; and to ensure that risk, not luck, decides who is tested.
Great to join @BrineHealth and James Bethell to discuss the tough choices facing the NHS – and how we can deliver better healthcare within the financial realities we face. @PreventionPodc

Terminally ill @AshleyDalton_MP makes it clear that there are no excuses for passing the assisted suicide Bill, which is known to be full of flaws.
London needs more than an administrator. It needs a champion, someone who understands its potential and is prepared to fight for its future.
That’s why I’m running to be the Conservative Candidate for London Mayor.

Leasehold is blighting lives.
Leasehold is a barrier to a fair and efficient modern residential property market.
Leasehold is an anachronism in the twenty-first century.
This Labour government is going to do what’s necessary, by the end of this Parliament, to dismantle it and emancipate leaseholders across the country👇🏻
