Kay Wadsworth, who lost her daughter Kimberly to gambling, has written a powerful letter to the @BarclaysWSL ahead of the @lionesses World Cup match tomorrow.
@KayWadsworth6 is calling on the women's game to think of their young fans and reject all gambling partnerships.
Please read & share her letter 👇

Dear Women’s Super League,
It’s wonderful the World Cup is giving women’s football the platform it deserves on the world stage. And with that increased profile will rightly come more opportunities for commercial partnerships. You deserve it.
But I want to make a heartfelt plea to England women’s football not to go the same way as the men’s game and be swamped with gambling partnerships.
I lost my daughter Kimberly, a Leeds United fan, to gambling-related suicide in 2018. It shattered my life, she’s my only child, and I’ll never be the same person I once was.
Kimberly was given “VIP” status by a gambling firm and was groomed and given “free bet” bonuses and similar promotional offers to keep her gambling, even when she was clearly losing large, unsustainable amounts of money. Then I lost her forever.
Around 3,500 gambling ads are visible at a Premier League game and each one of those is a possible hook into a lifetime of addiction for a young fan.
As my experience shows, it’s not just young men who are at risk, and women are increasingly targeted by gambling advertising.
Please don’t go down this path. The Lionesses have inspired a generation of young fans. There’s more dignity in valuing the wellbeing of these girls and boys with their whole lives ahead of them than there is in taking bloodied cash from a gambling firm.
The public are overwhelmingly behind ending gambling advertising in football. Any decision to partner with a gambling firm, especially after being warned of the dangers, would be incredibly unpopular.
I believe you’ll listen, and on Kimberly’s behalf I thank you.
All the best,
Kay Wadsworth
We have sat down with top professional players and coaches all across Europe, and asked them how they made it pro..
Nearly all of them have a different story to tell, all which we will reveal.
There is more than one way to make it pro, be patient and keep working hard.
I had the privilege of meeting Kay the other week, and I was struck by her tenacity and determination to make sure no other family has to go through what she has.
Kay and @the_bigstep are leading the way on gambling reform - and it’s about time the government listened.
“The lessons need to be learned from those deaths. Major reforms are needed”
Please watch & share this clip of Charles & Liz Ritchie on @SkyNews about the need for urgent, life-saving action on game design & affordability checks
“What’s close to home is the link between the products & the health harm, like cigarettes, like tobacco”
Please watch & share this powerful clip of Liz Ritchie outlining why a statutory levy is so urgently needed
