I watched a junior admin troubleshoot a connectivity issue.
He couldn't SSH into a server.
He ran iptables -L.
He saw a bunch of rules.
He panicked.
He ran iptables -F.
Suddenly, he could SSH in.
He cheered.

I asked if he enjoyed turning the server into a demilitarized zone or just hated firewalls.

He looked confused and said, "It worked."

I told him he didn't fix the issue; he just removed the condom and declared the STD cured.
I walked him through the logs.
We saw that his IP was being rate limited due to a brute-force attempt from his previous office.

I forced him to write an iptables restore script from memory, then locked his outgoing SSH to port 22 only until he restored the original rules.
