The CPA syllabus in Kenya is getting overhauled as it prepares to admit CBC students.
The new syllabus puts more emphasis on practical training.
In the final section, students undergo purely hands on accounting training through real assignments and simulations.
Another critical change: Company Law paper has been completely removed from CPA. It is now left to lawyers & Company Secretaries.
But one change I particularly like is the scrapping of specialization at the Advanced Level. Students must now sit all the papers.
This is a move in the right direction. A CPA student should be trained in the entire finance function, not just one corner of it.
There is no glory in being an audit specialist who has no clue about taxation.
A CPA must be a full CPA, not a half baked one.
Specialisation can come later in one's career, but not during CPA training.
What are your observations?
- Are these changes making the CPA qualification stronger?
- As a CPA student, how do you receive these changes?
