🤦♂️🤦♂️
Pitcher has three quality pitches, FB, SL, and CH. Coach who calls pitches refuses to call CH and makes a backhanded comment about only having two pitches. Coach never watches him throw bullpens. Coach has never played catch with him. Coach never talks with him about pitching. Coach never gives feedback before, during, or after competing. AND coach was never a pitcher himself so understanding the position isn’t all there.
I’ve heard this story so many times over the years, it’s disappointing. There are young pitchers out there who have been educated on this part of the game only to have it taken away from them in situations like this.
I’d love to see a culture shift where all coaches took time to study this side of the game deeper. Teach it and let the kids take control of it with their input. Most young pitchers and catcher would love this part of the game if they were taught it, encouraged, and allowed to do it.
Play ball!!
The hitters who win aren't the ones who listened to everyone.
They're the ones who figured out who to stop listening to.
Tune out to lock in.
(Kevin McGonigle told me this exact thing, too)
@BaseballDudes48 I just sat down with my sophomore pitcher and showed him how he was at a deficit of at least 1k calories per day...he was still skeptical, because teenagers. He also went 8 hours without eating between lunch and dinner with almost four hours of practice and workouts. Suboptimal.

Why do so many kids quit baseball before high school?
They lose interest.
They get frustrated.
They burn out.
But the good news?
We can fix it!
Here are 3 BIG reasons why kids quit and how we can keep them in the game. 🧵👇
The best player on every single team should bat leadoff in every single game.
In 2024, across MLB, leadoff hitters had 10,711 plate appearances with the potential to either tie the game or take the lead — 957 more than three-hole hitters. This includes additional opportunities in high-leverage scenarios.
Plate appearances with the ability to tie the game or take the lead across MLB in 2024:
During the entire game:
Batting 1st - 10,711
Batting 3rd - 9,754
(+9.81% for leadoff)
After the 1st inning:
Batting 1st - 6,130
Batting 3rd - 5,426
(+12.97% for leadoff)
From the 7th inning on:
Batting 1st - 1,921
Batting 3rd - 1,751
(+9.71% for leadoff)
From the 9th inning on:
Batting 1st - 685
Batting 3rd - 604
(+13.41% for leadoff)
The conclusion is clear: to maximize your best player’s impact on the game, you want them in the most critical situations.
The leadoff spot creates more opportunities to influence the outcome, whether early in the game, late in the game, or in high-leverage moments.
By placing your best player at the top of the lineup, you're ensuring they receive the maximum number of chances to make a difference — especially when they can change the course of the game.
