Destroying a Hindu deity’s statue under the pretext of a border dispute is unacceptable. Whether placed by Cambodia or not, attacking faith and heritage only exposes intolerance.
Both Thailand and Cambodia are Buddhist nations, yet history records repeated persecution of Hindu temples and attempts to erase them. Violence against sacred symbols cannot be whitewashed with slogans. No religion proves its “peace” by destroying another’s faith.

She also reported that the attack on Cambodian forces in Thma Da commune, Pursat province, continued at 4:58 a.m. on December 9.

Families are taking shelter in storm drains and drainage culverts that often carry mixed wastewater, huddling below the concrete as gunfire sounds in the distance. When I see scenes like this, it makes my blood boil. I’m sure people in Thailand are doing the same thing right now. It shouldn’t come to this, yet it does.
PHNOM PENH— The National Defence Ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata said that at about 5:04 a.m. on December 8, Thai military forces opened fire on Cambodian units stationed in the An Ses area in Preah Vihear province.
According to the ministry, Thai forces subsequently escalated the attack by firing multiple rounds, including shots from tanks, toward Tamoan Thom temple as well as the 5 Makara zone near Preah Vihear Temple. Gunfire was also reported in the Chomka Chek area.
The Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia rejects as false the statement circulated by the Royal Thai Army’s official page and several Thai media outlets alleging that Cambodia initiated attacks with heavy weapons along the Cambodia–Thailand border. These claims are entirely untrue.
In fact, the Thai military forces launched the attack on the Cambodian forces at approximately 05:00 a.m. in the morning of 8 December 2025. It should be noted that this attack occurred after the Thai forces engaged in numerous provocative actions for many days, especially the incident yesterday at Prorlean Thmar area, with the objective of instigating confrontations.
Standing on the spirit of respecting all previous agreements and resolving conflicts peacefully according to international law, Cambodia did not retaliate at all during the two assaults and continues to monitor the situation vigilantly and with utmost caution.
Additionally, Cambodia, for the second time, has informed the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) about this incident and plans to request the AOT to conduct an investigation into the matter to ensure transparency, justice, and impartiality.
Vitit Muntarbhorn, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, resigned from the position due to “health reasons” some two weeks ago, following widespread criticisms over his inaction on the situation of human rights at the Cambodian-Thailand border.

Soeurt Chantrea, a contract teacher in Koun Kriel commune, said the blasts shook her school just before 7 a.m. “The explosions were so loud they startled everyone. The children bolted from their seats, crying and shouting, and even the teachers struggled to stay calm,” she said.
Some of her students, unable to get home because they had no bicycles, ran to her classroom and refused to leave. “I didn’t know how to comfort them. I felt powerless,” Chantrea said.
