Dear Fans,

In general we have been extremely open and transparent about all of our actions and decision making. We intend to continue to build in public, sharing our thinking along the way. However there is a tension between transparency and respecting the privacy of our staff and players.

When we release a player, we don’t say why. The same is true when we terminate a coach, or another staff member.

The reason is that we don’t want our opinions to negatively impact anyone’s future career. Context matters, fit matters, and someone who is not right for our club, might be perfect for someone else.

This value is currently being tested as false accusations are being made against us.

In an effort to try to provide as much visibility as possible we are here with the facts:

Housing:

For the duration of the season we provide free housing for our players. This is not a league standard but our own personal commitment to players.

We initially had our players in two separate adjoined houses, and our players provided feedback that they were too cramped. In July we rented an additional home and moved players into the new unit so they can have more space.

Player safety:

Unfortunately after this move there were a series of property crimes that impacted players in the new house and left them feeling unsafe.

As a result we immediately moved players to a hotel, and have now found a different home where the players will be moved to today.

We have also coordinated with OPD and the Alameda Sheriff Department to ensure that players are safe in both their old and new accommodations

Player safety is of the utmost importance to us, and we believe the quick actions we have taken demonstrate a commitment to that value.

Roster changes:

After terminating our manager, an agent demanded we trade the players she represents on the team.

We have honored their request. We want the best for our players, even if it means helping them find a new team where they can continue to showcase their talents.

As a result we traded Trevor Halsema and Austin Davis. We also have to follow common practice in the Pioneer League, which means we can’t share full details on the exchange until Monday.

From a pure baseball perspective we are pleased with the trade we have executed and believe we will have a strong team and will continue to compete for a playoff spot.

We wish Halsema and Davis the best of luck for the remainder of the season. They are great players and great people and we will root for them always.

Finally, we have learned that Myles Jefferson's injury will require season ending surgery. Because of that, he asked to be released and we accommodated his request. We are not going to comment on the medical treatment of a player who is not on our team.

The Ballers players have access to both a team trainer and a team doctor, and if a player needs to see a specialist, we work with the player to arrange that and navigate all required insurance approvals.

The facts and timeline surrounding Myles’ injury and treatment are being investigated internally. If this inquiry results in finding gaps in our process or procedures we will adjust them accordingly. However, our current understanding of the facts and timeline of how our training staff and medical staff responded to the injury are in step with best practices and standards.

We wish Myles the best while he is navigating his recovery.

Although it’s been very difficult, we stand by our recent decisions. However we do acknowledge that we have not communicated these matters well to date, and we will do better in the future.

We continue to work hard each and every day to build something great. We always knew there would be missteps and hard days along the way. We will never waiver in our goal: to build a winning culture and bring championship baseball back to Oakland. .
