AWARAPAN & #AWARAPAN2 THE RELIGIOUS PROPAGANDA EXPOSED!

#Awarapan is remembered today as a cult classic for its music, emotions and Emraan Hashmi’s performance. But there is one aspect of the film that deserves to be exposed its religious framing.

#EmraanHashmi plays Shivam Pandit, a Hindu-named character who is shown as an atheist someone who does not believe in God.

Then he falls in love with Aaliya, a deeply religious Muslim woman. Religion becomes an important part of their relationship, and Aaliya repeatedly represents faith, prayer and belief in God, while Shivam represents disbelief.

Now look at what happens next.

After Aaliya’s death, Shivam’s journey takes him towards a Buddhist monastery, where people save him and become part of his spiritual transformation. He gradually begins to believe in God and discovers a sense of faith and redemption.

So the pattern is striking:

Hindu-named protagonist → atheist.

Muslim woman deeply religious and devoted.

Her faith influences his spiritual awakening.

Buddhist monastery becomes part of his survival and redemption.

The problem is NOT showing a Muslim character as religious.
The problem is NOT showing Buddhism positively.

The problem is the contrast created by the screenplay.

The Hindu protagonist is introduced without faith, while the strongest expressions of spirituality surrounding his transformation come through other religious traditions.

If the message was simply “God exists beyond religion”, why does the Hindu-named character have to discover faith through everyone else?

Why is the Hindu character the one who needs to be taught about God?

Why are other religious identities repeatedly positioned as the source of his spiritual awakening?

That is where the film’s ideological framing becomes impossible to ignore.

And this becomes even more interesting when we look at the wider Bhatt filmography.

Religion, Hindu-Muslim identity, communal conflict and faith have repeatedly been important themes in Bhatt-associated cinema. Zakhm is one major example, directly dealing with religious identity and communal tensions. Sangharsh also uses religion and belief as important elements of its narrative.

So Awarapan does not exist in complete isolation from that cinematic history.

And now comes AWARAPAN 2.

The sequel brings Shivam Pandit back nearly two decades later and continues his story of pain, redemption, devotion and revenge. The Buddhist monastery remains connected to Shivam’s mythology, meaning the religious and spiritual foundation established in the first film is still relevant to the sequel.

This is why audiences should not watch Awarapan 2 blindly through nostalgia.

Watch the character construction.

Watch the religious symbolism.

Watch who is shown with faith and who is shown without it.

Watch who teaches whom about God.

Watch which religions become associated with spirituality and redemption.

Because propaganda does not always come through a character saying, “This religion is good and that religion is bad.”

It can also be created through repeated contrasts, symbolism and the way characters belonging to different religions are constructed.

And that is exactly what makes Awarapan worth examining.

Awarapan may have been sold as an emotional love story, but religion is deeply embedded in Shivam Pandit’s entire character arc.

You can love the songs.
You can love Emraan Hashmi’s performance.
You can call it a cult classic.

But you cannot demand that audiences stop analysing the message underneath the story.

This time, watch the film with your eyes open.

At a time when thousands are battling the crisis, such conduct is deeply insensitive and unacceptable. The authorities must investigate the video and take appropriate action if any law has been violated.

Assam: No questions about the insufficient CM Relief Kit, Nagaland Illegal Mining.

Opposition MLA Akhil Gogoi who appeared to be a strong critic of the Government, held multiple press conferences to raise these issues.

He spent hours with the CM today even drove in the same car, but didn’t seek answers to any of these questions.

Instead, he expressed his happiness after the CM added a programme to the schedule upon his request.

Yesterday, in Nepali Khuti, a lady approached the CM & requested him to stop any stone-cutting, sand extraction from the Dikhow river - allegedly one of the key reasons behind the floods in Upper Assam.

But, vocal critics like Akhil Gogoi missed a golden opportunity seeking the answers that people have been asking for.

If not now, what’s the point of holding press conferences and attacking the CM if eventually he is to solve everything himself?

That’s one strong reason to not politicise such a catastrophe.

The Flood Has Swept Away the Congress!

Where is the Congress? Amid the ongoing flood crisis in Upper Assam, the Congress appears to be facing the biggest existential crisis of all. Everyone else seems to be present—except the Congress.

Upper Assam has been hit by devastating floods. Many people in Sivasagar say they have never witnessed such a flood in the last 80–100 years. For the first time, residents of Sivasagar, Nazira, and Charaideo are facing a disaster of this scale and are looking for someone to stand by them. In times like these, even a bottle of drinking water can make a difference. Many individuals and organizations have been making every possible effort to reach and assist flood victims.

But, mysteriously, the Congress has disappeared.

The only visible Congress presence in the Hindu-majority belt is Gaurav Gogoi, who has been independently trying to help flood victims in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency. Gaurav is alone. Not a single Congress MLA has been seen with him. In fact, the Congress currently has no Hindu MLAs. Dr. Joy Prakash Das, a Hindu MLA elected from Naoboicha with the support of Muslim voters, does not belong to Gaurav Gogoi’s camp; he is aligned with Rakibul Hussain’s camp. During this crisis, Joy Prakash Das has not been seen alongside Gaurav.

Meanwhile, Badruddin Ajmal has become highly active in the flood-affected areas. The veteran leader has been camping in Sivasagar and distributing relief among Hindu communities in a way that has surprised many. Suddenly, the number of Ajmal’s admirers among Hindus appears to be growing. The relief work carried out by the AIUDF under Ajmal’s leadership in Upper Assam is something the Congress could have taken as an example. While distributing relief in the Hindu-majority district of Sivasagar, Ajmal has been accompanied by several former Muslim MLAs. Even so, his team has been distributing aid generously.

But this flood seems to have swept the Congress away.

The question is: Where is the Congress Legislative Party? Where has the leadership of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee gone?

After the Congress’s Hindu leaders suffered a crushing defeat in the last election, they appear to have been deeply demoralized. Their morale has been shattered. Having failed to win even a single seat in Upper Assam, they now seem unwilling to visit the region. For these reasons, the Congress has gradually become invisible. Perhaps if floods had struck the minority-dominated areas of Lower Assam, these MLAs—and perhaps the Congress itself—would have become more active.

The latest development is even more surprising. While Upper Assam continues to struggle with this devastating flood, what is the Congress leadership doing? You may be surprised to learn that the party has organized a meeting in Morigaon. Almost all senior Congress leaders are present, including Gaurav Gogoi, Rakibul Hussain, Nurul Huda, Tanzil Hussain, Asif Nazar, and others. According to the text, they appear to be giving little importance to the flood situation in Upper Assam. After the party’s poor electoral performance in the region, Upper Assam seems to have become a low priority for the Congress. The text concludes by alleging that the Congress is now focused only on securing Miya (Muslim) votes.
