For years, Kala-Azar was a death sentence for some of India’s poorest families.
And treatment itself felt like punishment.
15 injections. Every alternate day.
A drug that sometimes caused dangerous heart complications.
For many families, surviving the disease wasn’t the only battle, a month away from work often meant losing the income that kept food on the table.
Prof. Shyam Sundar from Banaras Hindu University looked at this reality and asked:
What if one dose is enough?
In 2010, his landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a single-dose liposomal amphotericin B treatment could cure Kala-Azar with a 95.6% success rate.
One breakthrough changed everything.
He also helped introduce rapid diagnostic strip tests that cut detection time from weeks to minutes.
WHO updated treatment protocols.
The medicine that cost nearly ₹19,000 per vial started reaching India free through donation programmes.
Today, India has moved from battling Kala-Azar outbreaks to pushing toward elimination.
And behind that story is a professor who spent decades making sure poverty didn’t decide who lives and who dies.

Spent most of the day reading Hunter Biden’s tweets and responses. Also read my Twitter friends joy when they also read them. While democrats hide, Hunter came out swinging. Today was my most enjoyable Twitter day in a long time.
@yaajushi There is a reason stereotypes exist .. one of my relatives lost his wife and re married .. his new wife was a step mother from hell .. so even if the dad cares for his children the over all dynamics in his new home may not work out well for his children .
This advice may sound harsh, but I also have a different take. The line flows through father and the beeja takes precedence over kshetra in most everyday cases. The child HAS TO BE owned by the father, but step-father has no moral obligation to own the child.
Also, child has +
One of the few things I did learn in high school was about how much is determined by our social background.
I had that discussion again with one of my professors during my masters degree. He was a working class guy who “made it” after one of his own professors introduced him to Bourdieu’s work.
It’s easier to escape social determinism when you fully understand the rules and decide which ones to ignore.
Anyway, reading Bourdieu’s work is well worth it, good stuff.
I do not say this lightly: a megadose of L-theanine can bring you back from the brink of the worst anxiety attack or stress spiral imaginable
If I had a dollar for every time it stopped me from calling an ambulance, I’d have many dollars.
I’d go as far as to say it might even cure heartbreak.
Dave Ramsey goes off on a mom of 4 who bought $47K solar panels to fix a $200 utility bill
Caller: "We have 4 kids, live in a 900 square foot house, and bought $47,000 worth of solar panels to stabilize a $200 utility bill"
Dave: "We buy $47,000 worth of solar panels to stabilize a $200 utility bill with another bill that is almost equal to that"
"You justify doing something really dumb to get away from the crisis. You’re making things worse every time you do that"

All time classic from K.Viswanath, the first collaboration with Kamal Hassan, they would later do Swathimutyam and Subhasankalpam.
The story of Balu an aspiring dancer, son of a cook, who has the talent, passion, but his poverty prevents him from pursuing it. He comes across Madhavi( Jayaprada), a rich girl, who seeing the talent in Balu, decides to help him in pursuing his dream. However destiny deals a cruel blow, leading Balu to become a cynical alcoholic.
Viswanath wonderfully deals with the themes of heartbreak, destiny, in his usual sensitive manner. The climax has to be one of the most poignant ever.
While Kamal is brilliant as usual as Balu, the movie has two more great performances.
Jayaprada as Madhavi is top notch, and she looks gorgeous. Vishwanath's movies always had strong female characters, and Madhavi is one. The woman who truly understand Balu's passion, tries her best to help him, even when he has become a wreck.
The other character is Raghu, played by Sharat Babu, Balu's close friend, who stands by him throughout, even when he is on a downward slope. Sharat Babu has been one actor who always delivered in a good role, and here too the same.
Ilayaraja composes for Vishwanath the first time, and the result is an outstanding score from the romantic "Mounamelanoi" to the haunting "Vedam Anuvuna Naadam" to the divine opening song "Om Namah Sivaya", every song is a gem.
CALLER: “Hi Dave, I just inherited $50,000,000 in cash and I don’t know what to do with it.”
DAVE RAMSEY: “Who in the world left you $50,000,000?”
CALLER: “My parents. My dad was into everything — real estate, car dealerships, private jets.”
DAVE RAMSEY: “Okay… first thing. Don’t do anything rushed. Don’t touch it yet.”
CALLER: “Really?”
DAVE RAMSEY: “The people who have the most fun with money are the ones who give. Wealthy people who give are the ones who actually enjoy it.”
A MAN INHERITED $50,000,000 IN CASH AND STILL CALLED DAVE RAMSEY FOR ADVICE.
THAT’S EITHER THE SMARTEST THING OR THE MOST HUMBLE THING I’VE EVER HEARD.
i believe in re-reading and re-watching your favourite books & movies at different stages of your life. the plot never changes, but your perspective does.
@defiantsunfloer No, there are no incentives or societal shaming available ..
Women must put up boundaries by themselves.
Can't wait for men to wake up.
Cooking daily & in many homes,2X a day in this heat isn't just "running a household." It's intense physical labor. Yet,"What’s for lunch/dinner?"is treated like a casual question, even when she's sick, exhausted or burnt out
Normalize respecting women who feed you every single day
